Music Review: Meghan Trainor "All About That Bass"

Meghan Trainor

All About That Bass

Album: N/A

Year: 2014

Meghan Trainor likes her curvy body in the repetitive “All About That Bass.”

Jolly handclaps open the single, setting a comfortable tone. In the  chorus, she says she doesn’t let words bother her. She will dance to the music and not care what people are saying. (“Because you know I'm all about that bass,/'Bout that bass 'bout that bass, no treble/I'm all 'bout that bass, 'bout that bass, no treble/I'm all 'bout that bass, 'bout that bass, no treble/I'm all 'bout that bass, 'bout that bass.”)

Her friend tries not to say chubby around. She tells her friend that it isn’t a bad word. She wakes up every morning and sees her body. However, she adds the little extra weight gives her a butt she is proud to have. She’s got decent sized breasts and some hips. She sees the magazines while she’s grocery shopping and guffaws at the images. She thinks people are great-looking the way they are. Her mom raised her to not to be self-conscious about her weight. She also said that it’s a myth that guys go for the skinny girls first. She will find a guy who will think she’s beautiful. She has no intention of starving herself for a guy. (“Yeah it's pretty clear, I ain't no size 2/But I can shake it, shake it like I'm supposed to do/'Cause I got that boom boom that all the boys chase/All the right junk in all the right places/I see the magazines working that Photoshop/We know that shit ain't real/Come on now, make it stop/If you got beauty beauty just raise 'em up/'Cause every inch of you is perfect/From the bottom to the top/Yeah, my momma she told me don't worry about your size/She says, boys they like a little more booty to hold at night/You know I won't be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll/So, if that's what's you're into/Then go ahead and move along.”)

        The chorus is sung again.

She says she’s going to make it curves popular again. It irritates her when she hears thin girls complain that they have a pouch and it’s not even there.  Their fishing for compliments and they really have no business saying it. They don’t know how it really feels. (“I'm bringing booty back/Go ahead and tell them skinny bitches Hey!/No, I'm just playing I know you think you're fat,/But I'm here to tell you that/Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top/Yeah, my momma she told me don't worry about your size/She says, boys they like a little more booty to hold at nigh/You know I won't be no stick figure silicone Barbie doll/So, if that's what's you're into/Then go ahead and move along.”)

The chorus is sung again to end the single.

Trainor’s mucous rap has let her mother’s advice swell her ego. It’s great she feels good about herself. However, she ends up putting thin girls down as a result. She’s as bad as the people who have insulted her for years. She makes some excellent points in the first verse, though. She eventually takes it too far.

The faddish  “All About That Bass” is in love with itself just a little too much.
