Music Review: Trey Songz "Na Na"
Trey Songz
Na Na
Album: Trigga
Year: 2014
Trey Songz only cares about getting laid by attractive women in the blatant “Na Na.”
In the intro, calculating synths open the single, setting a secretive tone. Songz tries to get everyone into his single and namedrops the producer, DJ Mustard and the his new album title. (“Put your hands in the air (in the air)/Trigga/Put your, put your hands up in the air/Mustard on the beat.”)
In the pre-chorus, she adjusts the strap on her dress, showing a bit more of her breasts. His eyes stay focused on her chest, waiting to see if her nipple will pop out. He plans to buy whatever he has to in order to sleep with her. (“Oh na na, look what you done started/Oh na na, why you gotta act so naughty/Oh na na, I’m about to spend all this cash/Oh na na, if you keep shaking that ass.”)
In the chorus, the Teena Marie “Oh La La” sample kicks in as he puts his hand on her bottom and taps it. He’s about ready to jump in the air. He is going to have sex tonight and he can’t wait to get her into his bed. (“Oh na na na, put your hands in the air if you’re fucking tonight/Oh na na na, keep your hands in the air if you’re fucking tonight/Oh na na na, oh na na na na na na na (everybody say it like)/Oh na na na, oh na na na na na na na (everybody say.”)
He says he’s her type and will be able to please her. She’ll be talking to her friends about his great body and how well he knew hers in one night. While she takes a spoonful of soup, he says they don’t have to stay. Anytime she wants to leave is ok with him. He says she knows she’s had some terrible boyfriends. He’s there to restore her faith in men again. Better yet, he adds, she won’t have to tell him anything. She’ll give him a look and he’ll snap his finger for the server to come to their table. (“I’m that ***** that you like, yeah/I’ma give you what you like, yeah/Oh, yeah, I’ma give it to you right, yeah/Best time of your life, yeah, oh yeah/Baby when you ready tell the waitress get the check/Girl I know you’re ready, I ain’t even gotta check/You been through the worst/Let me show you who’s the best/You know I’ma get you right/Curve them ****** to the left, like.”)
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.
On their way to his house, he recites his speech: she’s a beautiful woman and he never met anyone like her before. He’ll bring her to another level and turn her into a local celebrity. She’ll be able to support herself. (“You’re the one that’s bad as hell, yeah/You’re the one I ain’t never had, yeah (oh yeah)/All the problems you did have, yeah/Leave them broke ****** in the past, yeah (oh yeah)/Girl you had good but I could give you better/I have you thinking about forever/I’ma make you say.”)
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.
In the bridge, he’s in an awesome mood. He says she’s going remember tonight for the rest of her life. (“I’m feeling lucky tonight/When we leave this party you gonn’ love me tonight/You feeling lucky tonight/When we leave this party you gonn’ love me tonight.”)
The chorus is sung again.
In the final section, he says “hands in the air” twice.
Songz’s blasé vocals have had hundreds of women His spiel is what woman what to want to hear. Each woman falls for it every time. It never fails. Then, once he sleeps with them, it’s on to the next one. It’s puzzling as to why current male pop singers want to sound like they get their hookups from Instagram.
The classless “Na Na” should get down on its hands and knees and thank Teena Marie’s estate for even allowing him to get near her music. It allows him to sound passable which is far than the single deserves.
