Music Review: Becky G "Shower"

Becky G

Shower

Album: TBA

Year: 2014

Becky G just found out her crush likes her in the  flaccid  “Shower.”

Begging strings open the single and then flip right to bumping synths, setting a halting tone. She presses the button on her iPod again to replay the song. It reminds her of how her crush looks at her. Today, he asked her about how she did in the test they took in class. After class, her friend nudged, wanting to know every detail. She couldn’t stop smiling. She replays the memory in her head again. (“I don't know if it's something about ya/Got me feelin’ like I can't be without ya/Anytime someone mentions your name/I'll be feelin as if I'm around ya/Ain't no words to describe you babe/All I know that you take me high/Can you tell that you drive me crazy/Cause I can't get you off my mind.”)

In the pre-chorus, she undoes the covers on her bed and pictures him on it. They are making out. In the morning, her alarm clock will end her dream of them playing baseball in the middle of New York. He’s her best friend. (“Think of you when I'm going to bed/When I wake up think of you again/You're my homie, lover and friend/Exactly why.”)

In the chorus, she turns the knob and starts singing John Legend’s “All of Me.” She towels herself off and puts on her bathrobe. She clicks on her iPod and dances along to the song. She is incredibly happy that he likes her back. (“You light me up inside/Like the 4th of July/Whenever you're around/I always seem to smile/And people ask me how/You're the reason why/I'm dancing in the mirror/Singing in the shower/La da dee la da da la da da/Singing in the shower.”)

She wants to put her arms around him and kiss him. She sees him and immediately gets turned on. She loves only him. She wouldn’t even consider a casual relationship with him. (“All I want all I need is your lovin’/Baby you make me hot like an oven/Since you came, you know I discovered/Baby I don't need me another/Know, know, all I know/Only you got me feeling so/And you know that I got to have ya/And I don't plan to let you go.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, she says they may not work out. However, she would like to try. They don’t have to rush into somethinng serious. She’ll stand by him as he fills out college applications and fears of leaving home. Some of her friends are telling her it’s dumb to get involved with someone now. However, she’s glad she finally has him in her life. She’s been waiting for it since freshman year. (“There ain't no guarantee/But I'll take chance on we/Baby let's take our time (Singing in the shower)/And when the time's get rough/There ain't no givin' up/Cause it's just feel so right (Singing in the shower)/Don't care what others say/If I got you I'm straight/You'll be my heart to light/Yeah.”)

An extended chorus ends the single. (“You light me up inside…singing in the shower/La da dee la da da la da da/You got me singing in the shower/La da dee la da da la da da/Singing in the shower/La da dee la da da la da da.”)

Becky G’s gawky vocals don’t drop the tough-girl rap persona completely. It makes her inexperience stand out more and the attempt to be provocative unintentionally hilarious.

The pimply “Shower” wants to be grown up and sexy but it’s nowhere near it yet.
