Countdown to the Big Update

Posted on July 1st by Frogboy.

There's going to be a big announcement next month that I think will make Sins players happy.

More copies of Sins of a Solar Empire will likely be sold this year than last year.  The biggest challenge Ironclad/Stardock have had is how to fit "more" stuff.  But I think there's a lot of Meta related stuff that could expand the Sins experience a great deal.

The reason the servers have had problems this month is that the number of players this month jumped substantially due to the Steam sale.  We're working with Ironclad on that issue.

Considering their track record, its probably another empty promise or some lame new trading card game, but I can't help but be excited for it. Another example of the many contributions I have given to this community. I'll be accepting karma points as an alternative to donations.

You've been such a big contributor to the community Sinkillr, the devs have given you the lifetime banishment award... um, how many times are we at now? 3 times? 4 times? More?

Still, we will all be waiting to here what the big announcement is I'm sure.

How sad that Goafan wants to troll on such a neutral topic such as this.

That's not a very neutral statement.  In fact, its outright trolling of the devs and then asking the community to thank you for it.

In all honesty, the only things that could get me really excited at this point woudl be an open source Iron Enigine (how long do you think it'll be before someone threads the crap out of the thing?) or Sins II.

Open source Iron Engine would be pretty amazing....

I'm surprised this forum doesn't IP ban for multiple accounts.

Dynamic IP is a wonderful thing....

I'd personally be happy if only a part of the source were released, the same way CvGameCoreDll source is released for Civilization games. For example, the framework for entity types (ability, buff, frigate, etc.) would be wide open, allowing mods to do even more than before. Ironclad could also possibly exploit the engine's newfound modularity for more interesting DLC expansions. I wouldn't expect the rendering side of things to become open though; Ironclad still needs to make money, and making the entire engine open source is just asking for people to compile the game for free and play it without paying Ironclad a dime.

You're really going to hate it when IPv6 starts phasing out IPv4 for end-user customers. With so much address space, ISPs will no longer need to maintain dynamic IP infrastructure (not until IPv6 runs out of addresses and requires mitigation via NAT); not only will everyone have a static IP, but every device they are using will have its own IP as well (last byte on the address allows for 256 unique IPs on a single LAN).

Assuming he's old enough to reset his parents router.

I thought it was an automatic thing; IPs get reset at time intervals ranging from once every few hours to once every few months, depending on your service provider, service type/tier, and location. Usually they stay within a certain range for all users in a certain location, so if there aren't that many forum users from the same location, an IP ban over a certain range is definitely doable.

Ignoring the virtol of the troll, it could possible some type of Sins II(yes i know its a long shot) but, from the customer report....

"Oxide Games is making a new type of 3D engine (Nitrous) that is designed for games that need to handle

a lot of high fidelity objects at once (common in strategy games and sometimes in role playing games). It
will be using this engine first in an unannounced Stardock game."

Sins II was the first thing I thought of when I heard about Nitrous as well. Stardock guy making an engine for a Stardock game where the demo is a space battle? Hmmm... Probably wishful thinking, but...

or it could be... sins of the fallen civilizations: legendary deluxe edition

IMO, an announcement of Sins 2 is more likely than some addition or change to current Sins...they've already stated that they aren't comfortable adding more to the game due to performance and memory, and it just seems like kind of a waste to try and open this game up or improve it when the engine is so obsolete compared to what can be started today....

Sometimes Sinkillr can be a good troll. This thread is an example. But he is still a troll.

How sad my numerous achievements aren't fully appreciated. Some folks just like tearing down others instead of building themselves up. Zombie is a good example. On his first day back he launches a relentless troll attack against me. And for what? Just because I have a different opinion that the Starclad sychophants on this forum? The hatred and vitrol spewed out of these people must stop. It is dividing the community at a time when we can't afford to be divided. I recommend an immediate de-karmaing on Seleuceia, as he is the most notorious example.

opening up the entity and ability/buff coding would be great and allow us to do things we can't do at the moment. I personally would like to add more 'classes' than fighter, frigate and capital.

I wonder how long it would take me to overhaul the buff system?  First thing I'd do would be allow more direct logic...  And if I could, I'd thread the thing...

MY BUFF COMPUTER WILL HAVE A TICK RATE OF MORE THAN ONE HERTZ!!!!!

Wow. did not hear about any Sins related announcement until now! So, we are very well into the second half of the month, when is it happening? Bring it oooon!

Frogboy said that on July 1st, so I imagine some time in mid August.

Just going to point out that is the announcement is a Sins II running on Nitrous, that's gonna single-handedly determine which graphic cards my new computer runs on...

lol I don't have quite that much money to burn.  Also, Nitrous is optimized for AMD, not NVidia.

As we near the end of July and thus the announcement time as mentioned by Frogboy (which if I were to guess will be after he gets back from vacation), I went digging through the forums to look at anything I could find.  I believe this post from several months ago is worth noting.

Ironclad doesn't have enough people to develop two games at once.
