So In Love With Two

Album: Mikalia

Year: 2000

Mikalia can’t decide which boy she likes better in the selfish “So In Love With Two.”

Haughty synths open the single, as Mikalia sings part of the chorus, setting a narcisstic tone.  She says she’s so confused! (“Oh yeah/Hey, hey, hey/I don't know what to do/Hey yeah.”)

She met first boy in one of her classes at school. She was paired up with him during a homework assignment. She liked talking with him and after the assignment was done, she kept finding reasons to call him. He is well-mannered  a perfect gentleman. Her parents love him. However, sometimes his concern can be bit a controlling to her. Now, the second guy she met while hanging out with one of her friends from dance. She doesn’t have to censor herself. The occansional swear word can come out of her mouth and he won’t bat an eyelash. She can be as daring as she wants, without worrying if she’s being ladylike. (“My number one: there could never be no one like you/How come I feel this way again/My number two: never tried to tell me what to say or do/I'm so in love with two.”)

In the pre-chorus, both guys like her and she doesn’t want to reject anyone. Either way, she hurts somebody. It’s a no-win situation. (“I don't want to push it/I don't want to fight/But this feeling keeps me/Up all night.”)

In the chorus, she keeps talking to both of them. She already has a date planned for Friday with boy #1. She will see boy #2 sometime during the weekend. Her mom pulled her aside yesterday and told her she is leading both boys on and it has to stop. She has some guilt, though. When she is with one boy, she is thinking about the other and vice versa. She really likes them both, though. For right now, she’s going to date them both until she make a clear-cut decision.  (“If I only could decide but I can't make up my mind/I'm breakin' all my rules because of you/You tell me it's not right and it tears me up inside/But the problem is I'm so in love with two/Hey, hey, hey/I don't know what to do/Hey, hey, hey/I choose the both of you/Hey yeah.”)

Yesterday, Boy #1 stayed with her until she could characterize every person in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird and state it’s theme. However, her friends think Boy #2 is so much cooler. They say Boy #1 is kind of a dork and he is so serious. They are sort of right. He’s really spontaneous and doesn’t care what anyone thinks about him. (“My number one: you give me everything I need/But some think  I'm better with/My number two: he's the one that really makes me feel so good/I'm so in love with two.”)

              The pre-chorus is sung again.

An extended chorus is sung. (“If I only could decide but I can't make up my mind… but the problem is I'm so in love with two/But the problem is I'm so in love with two/Hey, hey, hey/I don't know what to do/Hey, hey, hey/I choose the both of you/Hey yeah.”)

In the bridge, she is so emotionally exhausted from thinking about it all the time. She would like to do the right thing and break up with one of them. She can see the puppy dog look on Boy #2’s face already and she can’t deal with it. She needs help. (“Don't want to fight another night/Just want to make it right, c'mon/Ooh, my number one, my number two/Somebody tell me what I'm supposed to do/My number one, my number two/Somebody tell me I'm so in love with two.”)

The first part of the chorus is sung twice. (“If I only could decide but I can't make up my mind…but the problem is I'm so in love with two.”)

At the end, she’s figures she’s too young to tie herself down. (“Hey, hey, hey/
I choose the both of you/Hey yeah

Mikalia’s  smug  vocals lap up the attention from both boys. She’s clearly attractive (if she does say so herself) and she can’t possibly break either of the boys’ hearts. It would just be cruel of her. Most girls would envy her problem. She’s heard other girls call her a slut but they aren’t pretty anyway. They’d be lucky if a boy asked them a question about the weather.

The  questionable   “So In Love With Two”  takes itself too seriously.
