Bugs with Ship Designer

UPDATE: I changed the title to make this thread a more general discussion of bugs encountered while designing ships.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I created a ship last night and when I opened it up today, I noticed several problems related to grouping/exported objects and flipping.

Specifically, all of my flipped components were unflipped, I believe upon save, but possibly when I reloaded the game.

Some of my components were exported objects composed of multiple objects, and both the individual components making up the exports were flipped as well as the entire grouped object. For example, within the nacelle-like component, the wings and little triangular pieces were flipped, but the component as a whole was flipped as well.

Following are some pictures with some overlaid notes:

And out of the ship designer, the engine components (stellar folders, I think) were elongated... but not in the ship designer.

I did what I could to fix the ship, though I couldn't fix the components that are nested in the exported objects (perhaps this could change, somehow, so that exported objects retain an original template that can be modified, duplicated, etc.). Anyhow, I posted the mostly corrected version here.

Yeah, I noticed that the flip features do not seem to save. But rotate 180 on one of the things does actually seem to save. I went through all my designs and had to use the rotate feature instead.

That's what I've been doing too.

So I was building a pretty complex ship with lots of small parts and exported elements... I encountered some weird bugs.

The first bug happened several times as I was adding design components. Basically, every once in a while the designer would slow way down, as in it was essentially frozen. The cursor would move once every 20-30 seconds, but I couldn't do anything, neither in the designer nor with my computer in general. I couldn't ctrl+alt+del and the slow-down never resolved (I waited half an hour the first time). I had to manually power down the computer (power button). This happened three or four times as I finished the design.

The second bug happened as I was adding functional components. I added a hyperdrive plus, used symmetry, then added another (I think on a hardpoint located on the first hyperdrive plus). The result was... interesting.

Here's the correct view (with only the first hyperdrive plus):

I have been complaining about this also. I made a similar post about this a few weeks ago and got no reply. Others have also encountered this problem. When building custom ships I always encounter a major lag. UI slows down to a snail crawl. Toggling tools for ship parts work but after saving game and reloading parts flip back out of position.

I have not had this problem I see on your screenshot yet but it does look like a similar bug I encountered while playing GCII. When I use to many ship parts the ship would become distorted with graphical lines extending everywhere from the ship. Only way to correct this was to remove excess ship parts.

I am getting the same bug with ship building and game freezing.  As I try to start building a ship under user ships, everything freezes. can't even ctrl-alt-del.  Haven't been able to build any ships.

That's a really good looking ship!

What's your system resources look like when the slowdown happens?  I've spent most of my time in the designer and haven't run into that, although to be fair my designs aren't the most complex.

As tgallo said, when this particular slow-down occurs, the computer is unresponsive (other than the cursor moving intermittently in half-minute intervals)...

I can't ctrl+alt+del so I don't know what my resources are like... but I've got a sufficient computer: 4th gen i7-4470 3.4 GHz quad core with Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 +1.5GB) and 12 GB DDR3 RAM...

My computer does run hard when this particular problem arises, so it's safe to assume its sucking resources pretty heavily relative to the normal quiet operation of the game.

It may be helpful to Stardock if you can start up a resource monitor before hand to see what's going on.  My specs are pretty similar to yours and I haven't experienced this behavior.

Well like I said, I was adding quite a few components as well as using several multicomponent exports... so there was a lot going on. That being said, I'm not sure what triggered the issue because it is intermittent and somewhat unpredictable.

Does a resource monitor autosave information? Because the few times I've experienced this issue, I've had to manually shut down my computer using the power button due to complete unresponsiveness...

Unless it goes from normal to completely locked instantaneously, you should be able see what's spiked.  If memory serves, you can use MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner to display all the info in game.

I am getting the same major lag with the ship designer when I build any ship bigger than medium scale. Ship designer slows down to a crawl and takes several minutes to respond to any user input. This only happens to me when I try to build in large or huge scale. I don't have this problem with tiny. small or medium scale ship building.

This is definitely a bug in the ship designer for any ship building in large or huge scale.

Trump, I sent a bug report to Stardock about the lagging in the ship designer. They confirmed it is indeed a bug and plan to fix it in a future update. Brad Ather handled my report.

Thanks for submitting the report and for the update! I'm glad it is something they are aware of and can address.

Hey Trump! Just bumping this to let you know I am not seeing anymore lag or freezing in the ship designer. Appears the Beta Updates have addressed and fixed the problem.

Happy Ship Building!!!

Thanks for the update Rand. I agree--I've added TONS of components, grouped them, flipped them, etc. and no slow down. That bug seems to be squashed.

In my Beta feedback thread, however, I did recently post a series of additional quirks and bugs related to the designer.

Curious if you (or any of the others who spend a lot of time in the designer) have experienced any of the issues I've listed there...
