Am I Wrong
Album: Black Star Elephant
Year: 2013
Vincert Dery defends his unconventional life choices to everyone in the self-important “Am I Wrong.”
Lofty synths open the single, setting a noteworthy tone. Dery tells his group of his friends he didn’t apply to college. He’s going to head to Los Angeles. His friends exchange glances, not wanting to speak. He lifts his chin and lets out a loud “hmm.” He puts down his glass and says they may not agree with it but he doesn’t want to be like them, plugging away in a tiny dorm room for four years. He wants to experience life while he can. He may run out of money and end up waiting tables but at least he know he tried. (“Am I wrong for thinking out the box from where I stay?/Am I wrong for saying that I choose another way?/I ain't trying to do what everybody else doing/Just cause everybody doing what they all do/If one thing I know, I'll fall but I'll grow/I'm walking down this road of mine, this road that I call home.”)
In the chorus, Dery says he’s not all talk like them. He’s going to do what he set out what he intended to do. Stardom is his destiny and he thinks it’s possible. They can dismiss him all they want. However, it’s his opinion and that’s the only one that matters. (“So am I wrong?/For thinking that we could be something for real?/Now am I wrong?/For trying to reach the things that I can't see?/But that's just how I feel/That's just how I feel/That's just how I feel/Trying to reach the things that I can't see.”)
Sereba says trying to realize a dream isn’t a crazy thing. He believes he will succeed. He’s been talking about going to L.A. ever since middle school and unlike him, he’s not giving it up for something practical. They are letting guidance counselors and teachers brainwash them. They need to tell them to shut up and say it’s their lives. He says a lot of people are like them but are afraid to admit it. (“Am I tripping for having a vision?/My prediction: I'ma be on the top of the world/Walk your walk and don't look back, always do what you decide/Don't let them control your life, that's just how I feel/Fight for yours and don't let go, don't let them compare you, no/Don't worry, you're not alone, that's just how we feel.”)
Vinz sings the chorus again.
In the bridge, Sereba says he’s they have their ideas about life. He just hopes they will see the light one day when they look back at their lives. (“If you tell me I'm wrong, wrong/I don't wanna be right, right/If you tell me I'm wrong, wrong/I don't wanna be right/If you tell me I'm wrong, wrong/I don't wanna be right, right/If you tell me I'm wrong, wrong/I don't wanna be right
The chorus is sung twice to end the single.
Nico & Vinz’s sulking vocals think people are out to get them. Other people don’t understand. They are don’t want to hear another point of view. They think they are the ones who are right and unsupportive. Not comforming to society is something that should be praised, not as a dumb thing to do.
The egocentric “Am I Wrong” only wants to be told what it wants to be hear.
