Knowing cats, it probably intended to eat the child later itself, and it was merely annoyed that the dog tried to steal its food source.

Most female animals will fight against all odd's to protect the babies in their homes, even of a different species. Tara must have had a strong maternal bond for the boy..

I experienced this first hand when my dog Velvet used to protect our kittens from anything she thought would harm them, and would curl up with them as they slept. Momma kitty had passed during delivery and Velvet immediately took over the maternal role and raised them as kitty pups.. was Quite a sight watching 5 kittens following a big blue hair chow around like a line of ducks across our property.

One cat, one dog. Both got pregnant on the same day and delivered five each on the same day. They took turns taking care of the babies. Ten little ones running around the house was hilarious. True story.

The cynic in me feel like the cat was just responding to an aggressor in its own home, saving the kid was circumstantial. But then there's that moment when the cat bounces off the dog and looks back at the kid...

Cats are maternal and territorial. The child is part of its territory and belongs to it. Not altruism, I'm afraid.
