Music Review: Miranda Cosgrove "Dancing Crazy"

Miranda Cosgrove

Dancing Crazy

Album: High Maintenance EP

Year: 2010

Miranda Cosgrove parties all night with her boyfriend in the off-balance “Dancing Crazy.”

Halting synths open the single, setting a faulty tone.  She takes a sip from her cup and kisses her boyfriend. She doesn’t have anything about her life figured out. However, she’s ok with not knowing now. In another year, her boyfriend could be in dorm room in another state. She could be taking a year off in Europe somewhere. Although they haven’t been dating long, she doesn’t want to dump him to make out with another guy. He’s been a good friend to her and they have have a lot of fun together. She can see herself being in contact with him even if they break up. (“I've got a feeling that it's gonna be alright/We don't know where we're goin' and I don't know where I'm at/I'm kinda thinkin' I don't like nobody else/You know whatever happens, I will be right by your side.”)

In the pre-chorus, they talk amongst a group of friends. Some of them ask if they want to come over after the party to hang out for a little while. However, she tells their friends no. They are planning to get some breakfast maybe. (“You, me in the spotlight/Running around 'til the end of the night/Hot, hot keep it comin'/We can rock out 'til the early morning/You, me, going all night/We don't care who's wrong and who's right/Hot, hot, keep it comin'/We can rock out 'til the early morning.”)

In the chorus, he pulls into the family room, which is doubling as the dance floor. She exclaims that it’s her favorite song. He jumps up and down as she raises her hands, whipping her hair all around. She stops to take a breather and tells him she’s really having a good time and they kiss again. (“Everybody's dancin', dancin' crazy/And we never stop, we never stop/Everybody's ragin', ragin' crazy/Put your hands up, put your hands up/I like you and you like me/We get together and we're happy/Did you hear me say that?/Did you hear me say that?/Smack!/And I like the way that we kiss/You and me together like this/Did you hear me say that?/Did you hear me say that? /Smack!”)

The volume of the stereo goes up and she laughs into her boyfriend’s arm. It has been one great memory, something she will always remember. She and her boyfriend are a team. They know who to trust and what to avoid. (“Another night untold/Just crank that music up/We don't know where we're goin'/And I don't know where I'm at/It doesn't matter 'cause we always know what's up/I know whatever happens, you will be right by my side.”)

           The pre-chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

Cosgrove’ simulative vocals are set to recreate Avril Lavigne. Albeit, a nicer, polite version. There’s a split second of individuality in the second to last chorus. She seems to have a serious quality to her voice. However, it’s quickly squashed.

The ambling “Dancing Crazy” lets Lavigne’s sound take over, blocking it from anything that could be different.
