Game cannot run on my old comp; Am I screwed?

I have an HP 4540s laptop. It is the only machine that can run GalCiv 3. It's Windows 7 and up to date in terms of DirectX and all that, but GalCiv 3 gives me a message that it might not run properly on drivers older than like 2013 (my Intel drivers are a few months older).

I have tried my hardest to update my laptop's video drivers, but they aren't 'authorized' by Intel' and HP isn't up to date (2013-wise). My laptop can run it all fine, including whatever version of DirectX is necessary, but GalCiv 3 has major defects. These:

The text in the game never disappears, and it makes the game upplayable. Should I try to upgrade my OS a year from now, or expect appropriate modifications to GalCiv4?

If it's a problem with your drivers, and you can't update them, then your only hope would be to get new hardware :(

Contact Stardock support directly, they might be able to help you out.

It's strange. In the cases of laptops with integrated GPU (where are no switchable graphics) there are should be easy to update video drivers.

So doesn't the new drivers from Intel's website work after you uninstall the old one or you cannot even install it?

For example, one of my laptops is Lenovo s215 with integrated GPU (Radeon HD 8330). When I want update video driver I make "clean" uninstallation. After that I just install the new one.

Seems how the game won't be officially released until a year from now, it sounds like that will be what you need to do. Or get hardware that is much easier to keep up to date.

I know that my laptop, also HP, using Win 7 Home, 3 GB Memory, AMD CPU, AMD graphics (don't know right now by memory as not at home) will say through AMD that it uses the latest AMD drivers when searching or having it auto detect the card, but when it tries to install will not install the drivers over the current ones, sits at last driver update of December 2012.

With all that being said I did play Galactic Civilizations III Alpha 0.0.0.2 for about an hour on that computer without any noted issues.  The game ran much more slowly on that computer versus my brand new desktop but that was to be expected.

Wait for  the next Alpha patch.

I also get warnings after this last Apatch but just click OK and all is fine.

In looking at the pic I would say you have two video cards superimposed on each other.

I'm not a pc wiz, but may I suggest you go and duplicate this post in the PC gaming forum, or the joeuser forum.  Actually, I'm not sure if joeuser is accepted pace for your query - but PC gaming is for sure.

Not quite accurate. While it is true that if you can't update your drivers then you are stuck, there are ways to update your drivers in spite of what is allowed by the manufacturer.

Many people have had this same problem and have managed to use work arounds that allow them to install updated drivers that they otherwise were unable to install that corrected this problem. The instructions for doing this is in a thread somewhere on this forum and I am continuing to look for it, and will post a link to it here when I find it.

Note that this problem is the same as has been reported before, text from previous windows remains on the screen when it should not. It is in one of those threads that I expect to find the instructions that have been working for people with this problem. It is an older thread so it may take some time to find.

EDIT: I have not found the post I am looking for. What I remember is a problem with text being retained on a screen when it should have been removed, on a laptop with an integrated GPU (Intel?) and another GPU card (AMD?), a driver for which an update was available from the integrated CPU/GPU manufacturer (again Intel?) that refused to be updated, instructions someone posted for a safe way to uninstall the current driver so the newer driver could be installed without getting the rejection message, and the replies of success that this solved the problem. I think what I am running into is that the thread may have had a title that was not sufficiently descriptive of the problem.

If anyone here can find the correct thread, please post a link here.

EDIT2: OK. I found the thread I was looking for. Scan the whole thread and look at the link in reply #4. Scan this one as well. There is some information to be aware of. The steps needed are in the last three replies. Follow the steps carefully. Then let us know if it all works out.

OP:  Please place a ticket here:

With this tool run zip results as an attachment:

Also, include a description of the issue in detail and any images that will help illustrate it.

While it may indeed be a hardware \ driver hurdle we wont be able to help with, we would still like your logs to see what we may be able to do.

Odd that laptop has an HD4000 which should be at least 'capable' of playing the game. I have an HD4400 on my Asus ultrabook and it runs fine.

Are you sure you've downloaded the latest video drivers from HP for your laptop?

The problem is that the original poster can not download/install the latest driver without help. HP and/or Intel are preventing it. Even so, Intel has a post that gives instructions for getting around the problem.
