Hearts Don’t Think (They Feel)

Album: Natural Selection

Year:  1991

Frederick Thomas is the relationship expert in the uneventful  “Hearts Don’t Think (They Feel.)”

Cordial synths open the single, setting an easeful tone.  He believes people should be sincere. One particular couple comes across as a good example. On their first date, the man told her that he loved her. He said they would go on a trip one day together. However, the woman doubted him and thought he was hiding something. Her instinct turned out to be on point. Several dates later, he told her that it was moving too fast. For a brief while, she had her hopes up and he turned out to be yet another heartbreak. (“He said that it was love at first sight/You knew he wasn't right/Must be your method to his madness/She said that he should be for real/He said he could not deal/And now she's full of sadness.”)

In the pre-chorus, the woman has given up hope, believing love is not for her. She’s keep the relationships casual and unemotional from now on. However, she has a new learning experience which will help her out. (“She already know more than she knows/She knows that he may never come back/That will stop her from dreaming and scheming/Always holding on the right track.”)

In the chorus, he says love is pure emotion and shouldn’t be analyzed. (“You said that hearts don't think they feel/It's just a minor complication/Hearts don't think they feel/It's just a careful observation.”)

Second, emotion has to exist. There was another couple that seemed to be destined to be forever. They had been friends for years and knew everything about each other. The woman knew he was a good man. However, for the man, there wasn’t any chemistry. She had become like a sister to him. By all means, they should’ve been a successful pairing. (“She said she knew him well/But wasn't kiss and tell/He said she's just a good friend/Someone had told a lie/In that they can't deny/Who figured that it would end?”)

In the pre-chorus, people are unpredictable and it can be discouraging. (“Nobody knows what's really on your mind But I can really tell that (I can really tell that)/The look in your eye is saying goodbye/You may never look back.”)

          The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, he advises people to not let their pride get in their way. They should continue to pursue whomever they are interested in. (“There's no moral to the story/Somebody took your glory away/So don't let your tomorrows be sorrows/Live life today.”)

In the third pre-chorus, the woman is starting to believe in love again. (“She already know more than she knows…That don't stop her from dreaming and scheming/

Always holding on to the right track.”)

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

Natural Selection’s easygoing vocals share the stories they heard and take on the of a relationship adviser. However, it’s premature, given its common sense.

Considering their gender, it’s surprising that the lyrics are anti-male. In every tale, the men are dishonest and they are the ones causing the drama.

The obvious “Hearts Don’t Think (They Feel)” hasn’t met the requirements yet to be a qualified counselor in the ways of love.
