Find You

Album: Divergent sdtk

Year: 2014

Matthew Koma and Miriam Bryant, as Four and Tris respectively, fall for each other in the  convoluted  “Find You.”

A fluttery piano opens the single, setting an infatuated tone. He won’t ever let her see him flinch as she trains. But as her trainer, he can’t let her know. If she were to get hurt, he would feel responsible. He trusts with his fears, knowing she won’t exploit them for her own benefit. Her face registers concern as she sees him trapped inside a tiny room, trying to claw through the walls with his nails. He can help her keep her secret. (“Silent love is falling faith /To shatter me through your hallways/Into echoes you can feel/And rehearse the way you heal.”)

In the pre-chorus, Tris sees his eyes twinkle and in her imagination, pictures him doing a goofy dance. He’s cute and she’s so excited to train with him. (“Make them dance/Just like you/Cause you make me move/Yeah you always make me go.”)

In the chorus, Koman and Bryant say their quiet bond holds them together. They will protect with each other. They both believe a better world exists and follow the other to it. Neither will let the other become ensnared by the evil all around them. (“I'll run away with your footsteps/I'll build a city that dreams for two/And if you lose yourself/I will find you.”)

Koma says a single glance between them is all they have to do communicate. Together, they are powerful and potent, capable of taking down an empire. They are both resourceful and intelligent, using what’s available. However, they are each other’s weaknesses. (“High on words we almost used/We're fireworks with a wet fuse/Flying planes with paper wheels/To the same Achilles heels.”)

              Bryant sings the pre-chorus again.

They both sing the chorus again.

The fizzy synths crackle as Bryant adds “you make me go.”

In the bridge, Koma encourages her to find her best self. Bryant is only interested in his body and kissing a lot. (“Open up your skies (Turn up your night)/To the speed of light (Turn up your night)/Put your love in lights (Turn up your night)/I will find you.”)

                Bryant sings the pre-chorus again.

They both sing the chorus again.

Bryant sings an edited bridge. (“Yeah, you always make me go/Turn up your night/Turn up your night/Turn it up, turn it up.”)

Both sing “I will find you.”

Bryant sings the pre-chorus to end the single.

Koma’s suppressed vocals have had his emotions quashed He can’t feel and has been broken down. Meanwhile, Bryant’s witless vocals put on a cool front when Four is around but squeal with joy when she’s alone. They have nothing in the common with the characters and turn them into caricatures.

Zedd’s fizzy arrangement bubbles over itself and then sticks at the start of the chorus, unable to move. It’s awkward, breaking off the notes one by one. The pattern continues throughout, giving unintended whiplash.

The inept “Find You” has little understanding of the characters and manages to lessen interest in the story.
