Music Review: Beyonce "Halo"

Beyonce

Halo

Album: I Am…Sasha Fierce

Year: 2009

Beyonce has found the perfect boyfriend in the wondrous  “Halo.”

Celestial strings open the single, setting a heavenly tone.      From the first moment he smiled at her, she was at peace and relaxed. In their first couple of conversations, she told him about her younger brother’s passing. Instinctively, she knew he would listen to her. There was no reason to be defensive. It would only hurt him.  She let herself stumble over her words and not allow her fear of rejection control her. He’s a good person, someone who will always love her.  (“Remember those walls I built/Well, baby they're tumbling down/And they didn't even put up a fight/They didn't even make up a sound/I found a way to let you in/But I never really had a doubt/Standing in the light of your halo/I got my angel now.”)

In the pre-chorus, each emotion overpowers her, far more potent than they have ever been. She could figure out what he was thinking, making her usual tests irrelevant. She believes their relationship will work out. She trusts him completely, a first for her. (“It's like I've been awakened/Every rule I had you breakin'/It's the risk that I'm takin'/I ain't never gonna shut you out.”)

In the chorus, his confidence in her and constant support has guided her when she was away from him. He entered her life at the moment she stopped believing. It was as though she was meant to meet him. He shows his feelings and his smile is infectious. She hopes he won’t be disillusioned by any mistakes she may make or potential fights. .  (“Everywhere I'm looking now/I'm surrounded by your embrace/Baby I can see your halo/You know you're my saving grace/You're everything I need and more/It's written all over your face/Baby I can feel your halo/Pray it won't fade away/I can feel your halo halo halo/I can see your halo halo halo/I can feel your halo halo halo/I can see your halo halo halo.”)

She has a perpetual grin on her face. On her bad days, she thinks of him and she feels better. She can picture them getting married and having a family. She wants to be around him all the time. After she found out her on again/off again crush was engaged, she gave up. The thought of getting involved with someone again was painful. However, the love is natural as breathing. It’s like he’s an undiscovered part of her. (“Hit me like a ray of sun/Burning through my darkest night/You're the only one that I want/Think I'm addicted to your light/I swore I'd never fall again/But this don't even feel like falling/Gravity can't forget/To pull me back to the ground again.”)

The pre-chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

Beyonce’s adoring vocals look up to her boyfriend, wondering how she managed to find such a wonderful person to love her. It would not been luck. It must’ve been fate that brought them together.

The luminous “Halo” is a classic beauty, untarnished by overplay.
