2014 Grand Prix Season and My 30 Years

Well....finally got our locations....

I'll be doing my 'thing' on Turn 8 left...

Terry's doing hers on 4 right...

and the 2 coming over from South Oz...one's at 16.4 left and the other's on 7 right.

 

It's gonna be a blast....new category of racing...V6 turbos.....

Back in the day we had 1500cc 4 cylinders with twin turbos rated at 1350 hp ...called detonator engines...cos the literally blew after qually...

...race tune saw 950+...

This time the specs are quite different....but you can bet your left proverbial that lap times will be broken.

This year will be my 30th consecutive International Formula One Australian Grand Prix ....and I'll be one of only a dozen or two who can lay claim to that. [and as Aussie Grands Prix goes...it's my 35th ...and only two or three can claim that one].

I get a rest from waving flags with the F1s.... we have specific flaggies for that.  It's only at the MotoGP and Superbikes that I have to do both....Comms AND Flagging [at the same time] ....;)

Ah....nuts....

 

It was planned there'd be a photoshoot on the Startline for the 40 officials who have made it to 30 consecutive years....until someone realized many would be in Senior meetings at the time...so it's been cancelled.  [the list reads as a who's who of F1 officials.....plus me]....;)

Tomorrow's Thursday ...day 1 of the GP, and Friday the world gets a look at the new cars....

And just to make it all the more difficult [for us] they've freed up the car numbering...so bang goes the idea of consecutive numbering....

Day 1 ....still not king....Gandalf is looking ornery...

Oops...wrong story...

All the lead-up junk....haven't seen the F1s yet....they're out tomorrow.

Question will be....will the turbos light up and the cars expire [as happened decades ago]...;)

They don't sound like they used to.

You don't even need earplugs.

They might even be the quietest class of racing.

 

Murray Walker referred them [in the good old days] as sounding like a wounded animal....

Not anymore.

What was speed....noise...and glamour......

...is now speed....and glamour.

 

I remember 4 ton blocks of concrete actually vibrating from noise pressure...120db+

Now, the average hoon has a better note....;p

Qualifying has been run and won...Ricciardo is on the front row....and Vettel isn't....

I had a group photo session with the others who have done 30 years of F1 ....taken tonight on the front straight with Charlie Whiting and co.

I'm the only Comms who has done them all.

I'll upload a photo when it's accessible...;)

Today's Sunday....soon we'll see where the real talent is.

The 19 year old Ruskie did a brilliant job of getting into the top 10 in his first GP....

And Ricciardo is 10 places higher than Vettel.

Let's hope Hamilton doesn't have a dose of the over eagers and shunt Ricciardo off into the scenery on the first corner....;)
