Your top 5 4X games of all time.

Some other discussions on the forum prompted me to think about what would be my top 5 favourite 4X games ever. While I am pretty sure about the two firsts, the 3 others are not as certain. There are a few other games I considered but I eventually settled with this.

This is a For Fun thread, do not feel obligated to explain your choices. Hopefully this might prompt some people to try some games they did not before, or discover some underdog gems. Although in my case my choices are quite mainstream.

1. Galactic Civilization II

2.Civilization IV

3.Alpha Centauri

4.Master of Magic

5.Colonization ( original Dos game )

@TheBirthdayParty: I've looked around online and have come across many projects that people started and never finished or projects that are still being worked on... It's been awhile since i looked around though, so maybe there are finally some that are done!

Ive heard of it but never played. But Is it a 4x?  Looks like a Turn based version of starcraft. Well, I guess that might count as a 4x.

While there isn't much exploration, per se, you have to survey for minerals, gold and fuel.   There's a good assortment of land, sea and air units, as well as base defenses (such as gun turrets and anti-aircraft batteries).  The upgrade system is much more flexible than, say, Starcraft ... you can research upgrades for just about every aspect of a unit:  cost (to make it cheaper), hit points, speed, how much ammunition it can hold as well as the firepower and range.  Unlike, say, Starcraft, you can't just harvest resources anywhere, you have to have a way to get the minerals  back to your base, either by trucking it or building conduit to directly connect it to your resource network (which your production buildings draw from).  The research customization is, I think, one of its greatest strengths.  Its turn-based, but can also be simultaneous turn-based (so everyone takes their turns at the same time).

  3. Gal Civ II Ultimate
  4. Distant Worlds (all current expansions.)

Those are my top 4x games I like. However I have not played Endless space for a since it launched. I also play Xcom Enemy within (Great game) and fire up X3 occasionally.

SMAC is leagues ahead of the competition. Just so much polish in that game. The videos for all the wonders, the endless amount of lore, the massive tech tree that still managed to stay interesting, the realism (as a physicist, the tech tree is surprisingly realistic and features real concepts), the huge possibilities of terraforming, the unit customization... the list just goes on and on.

Otherwise,

Civ series

Galciv2 (3?) - the ship designer really is amazing

After that really not sure... maybe Endless Space and Master of Orion?
