Music Review: Mike Posner & Big Sean “Cooler Than Me”

Mike Posner & Big Sean

Cooler Than Me

Album: 31 Minutes To Takeoff

Year:  2010

Mike Posner trashes a girl for not liking him back in the resentful “Cooler Than Me.”

A smug guitar opens the single, setting a mocking tone. The chorus opens the single.   He smiled at her. He talked to her about the weather. He walked around, near and by her to get her attention. Little does she know that he’s a rising pop star and he destroy her with her with his words. She’ll hear the song and think of what she missed. However, she probably thinks his music is unrefined. She thinks she’s some sort of famous celebrity, wearing her oversized sunglasses and expected to be photographed at every turn. She’s not even nice at all. She would act like she didn’t even know who he was or glare at him if he brushed past her. (“If I could write you a song/And make you fall in love/I would already have you up under my arm/I used up all my tricks/I hope that you like this/But you probably

won't/You think you're cooler than me/You got designer shades/Just to hide your face and/You wear them around like/You're cooler than me/And you never say hey/Or remember my name/It's probably cause, you think you're cooler than me.”)

She wouldn’t ever wear sneakers from the department store. Everyday, she’s in expensive heels and walks hard on the carpet. She walks by him and he bounces in the seat from her feet hitting the floor. People snicker and mock her walk, stomping the floor after she leaves. She’s all about herself and then he references Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain.” (“You got your high brow/Shoes on your feet/And you wear them around/Like they ain't shit/But you don't know/The way that you look/When your steps/Make/That/Much/Noise/Shh/See:/I got you/All figured out,/You need everyone's eyes just to feel seen/Girl, you're so vain/You probably think that this song is about you/Don't you?/Don't you?”)

The chorus is sung again,

He says she expects people to just move when she walks by and be in awe of her. She doesn’t even realize how much hate her and talk about what a bitch she is once she’s out of earshot. (“You got your high brow/Switching your walk/And you don't even look when you pass by/But you don't know/The way that you look/When your steps/Make/

That/Much/Noise/Shh/See/I got you/All figured out/You need everyone's eyes just to feel seen/Girl, you're so vain/You probably think this song is about you/Don't you?/Don't you?.”)

       The chorus is sung again.

Big Sean’s says she’s stuck up. However, he could her make her happy and give her everything. However, once she finds out how much money he makes, then she’ll care about him. He says she’s nothing, just like Madonna was before she got famous. He agrees that she’s hot. But he’s better looking than her. (“And don't you dare act like you don't know/Know what's up/Cuz your nose is up/I'm approaching up. (Yup)/

Like I can't give you winter in the summer/Or summer in the winter/Miami in December/Trying to look bored in them Diors/She probably is/Was acting shallow until/She find out how deep that my pockets is/Mrs. Pre-Madonna/This is your reminder/That I think you're fine/But I'm finer.”)

In the bridge, Posner says she’s a flake, concerned about her looks and herself. (“Cause it sure seems/Cause it sure seems/You got no doubt/That you got no doubt/But we all seem/We all seem/We got your head/In the clouds.”)

The chorus is sung again to close the single.

Posner’s snippy vocals stick the knife in her back for daring to cross him. He will make no one will ever talk to her or want to be friends with her. However, she doesn’t like him and has made it clear to him. She’s not obligated to like him back, even though he may think so. It’s Posner who ends up showing his true bitchy nature which gives ends up validating her rejection of him.

Big Sean louses around in his rap, barely bothering to get up. He talks through the whole thing without really saying anything new. While he’s putting her down, his grammar is off and his pop culture references don’t make sense. Who is he to talk?

The patronizing “Cooler Than Me” apparently hasn’t ever heard of the term irony, which the single exemplifies for all the wrong reasons.
