As Long As You’re Loving Me

Album: More

Year: 2001

With her boyfriend’s confidence in her, Vitamin C feels as though she can do anything in the soupy  “As Long As You’re Loving Me.”

Chipper synths opens the single, setting a mawkish tone.   She claps her hands, delighted to see a scrapbook he made for her.  In it, she sees the first photos they took together before they were officially dating. She points to one of the photos of her sitting on a chair. They were at a friend’s party. All night he was trying to talk to her and she brushed him off. She tells him she’s grateful for his patience with her. She gives him a kiss and tells him she loves him. (“I believe in you/This is real for me/What I feel for you/Didn't come so naturally/At first I was afraid/Couldn't fight the fight/Couldn't keep the light on/With any other lights, oh love, oh love.”)

In the chorus, with her boyfriend in her life, she knows she has someone in her life who will support her. She can envision getting married to him and finally getting the perfect job. She can do impossible, even stuff she thought she couldn’t do. She wants him in her life. (“Now I'm ready for the world no matter what it brings/I can feel all my dreams coming true/As long as you're loving me/As long as you're loving me/I can move mountains, I can part seas/My heart will be open for eternity/As long as you're loving me/Yeah, yeah.”)

They are in sync with each other and are a natural team. He’s helped her believe in herself. She can cry with him after a horrible day, knowing it’s not the end of the world. (“This is what feels good/This is what feels right/The moment I wake up/Until we say goodnight/And I'm stronger than I was/I've reached down and I've touched/It's easier to lie down with you on my side/On the side.”)

In the second chorus, she says she can handle whatever problems that come her way. He’ll be right there to help her. (“Now I'm ready for the world no matter how it spins/Cause I'll always be in it with you/As long as you're loving me/As long as you're loving me (as long as you're loving me)/I can move mountains, I can part seas/My heart will be open for eternity/As long as you're loving me/Oh, as long as you're loving me.”)

Part of the first chorus is sung. (“Now I'm ready for the world no matter what it brings/I can feel all my dreams coming true/As long as you're loving me/As long as you're loving me.”)

In the final section, he has given a piece of mind about her life. She realizes she means something to someone. (“I know where I'm going/Where I belong/I'll be forever saving your love/As long as you're loving me, oh/As long as you're loving me/As long as you're loving me/As long as you're loving me.”)

Vitamin C’s schoolgirlish vocals write his name on her notebook with little hearts. She’s in love with love and squees at each thing he does. He’s her hero, love of her life and everything else she can think of. Nonetheless, she’s young and has not yet gone through a numbing heartbreak.

The  inexperienced  “As Long As You’re Loving Me” still has life lessons to learn.
