Music Review: Ciara "Like A Surgeon"

Ciara

Like A Surgeon

Album: Fantasy Ride

Year: 2009

Ciara role plays as Dr. Love, specializing in orgasms in the clinical  “Like A Surgeon.”

Springy synths open the single, setting a roused tone.  She kisses his collarbone, her hands pressing against his chest. She pulls him down on the bed and tells him to it’s time for his oral examination. She says he’ll be pleased with her. In the morning, he’ll wake up blissfully happy. (“Head back, eyes closed/Deep breath, let go/Bear with me, I'll take good care/I'm an expert, other girls just can't compare/I'm highly recommended, don't need a second opinion/You'll be all better, baby once I'm finished/So be a good patient, be patient/Be under my observation/And holla back in the morning.”)

In the pre-chorus, she says she can make any guy melt for her. (“I know you never had a girl quite like me, me, me/I take a hot boy /And give him cold feet, feet.”)

In the chorus, she says she knows every nuance of the body and organs. She has plenty of experience. He’ll be comfortable and she’ll help him unwind from his day. (“When it comes to love I'm like a surgeon, I’ma true tactician/I’m make ya body better when I get in the right position/I'm like a surgeon, I’m make ya body jump/Everytime my body pumps/I'm like a surgeon until your reflexes leave your knees/My loves like anesthesia, I'll rock you fast to sleep/I'm like a surgeon, oh yes I’m fully qualified/ Lay your head back on that pillow and relax your mind.”)

She continues to say that they are done. She gets out her cellphone and plans their next date. (“Check (Check) calling patient patient patient number one (one) make sure that you sign out (out) and when you're done/Make sure you grab a sucka on the way out the door/Aand make your next appointment/And come back and get some more.”)

He kept their date and came over the next weekend to her house.  She says she has to start with a kiss and lets her head rest on his chest. She tells him she has to look over body. He’ll always be her top priority. (“Now that you've learned, you'll be so glad you returned/Open up your mouth, let me check you out/My ears will be your stethoscope/We'll feel your vital signs and make sure your heart is beating like mine/I appreciate your recovery time/You'll need a physical (one more time)head to feet baby (your just fine) your my best patient/And you'll never have to wait in line.”)

In the pre-chorus, she changes “me” to her first initial, C.

        The chorus is sung again.

In the final section, she tells him she’s always there and willing to match his other girl. (“That's it baby you can count on C give you everything you need/Know that girl got nothing on m/So call me in case of an emergency.”)

Ciara’s orderly vocals maintain a distance, uncomfortable with talking dirty. She can get the words out but not act on them. It’s too strange for her.

The frigid “Like a Surgeon” teases but can’t follow through.
