Music Review: Miley Cyrus "Adore You"
Miley Cyrus
Adore You
Album: Bangerz
Year: 2013
Miley Cyrus exchanges sweet nothings with her boyfriend in the rhapsodic “Adore You.”
An idealistic piano opens the single, setting a warm tone. She snuggles into the crook of his arm. His eyes are half-closed. She pokes lightly on his bare chest, asking him if he’s awake. He answers he’s up and wants to know if everything is ok. She’s says yeah. She was just thinking why it took her so long to find him. During high school, she felt alone all the time. It would’ve been great if he would’ve been there with her. She could easily see him fitting into every phase of her life. He makes her incredibly happy. (“Baby, baby, yeah/Are you listening?/Wondering where you've been all my life/I just started living/Oh, baby are you listening?”)
In the chorus, he kisses her on her lips and tells her he loves her. She tells him he’s everything to her. Without him, she’s wandering, drifting from place to place without any purpose. (“When you say you love me/Know I love you more/And when you say you need me/Know I need you more/Boy, I adore you/I adore you.”)
She gathers her strength from him. In her most stressed moments at work, she thinks of him. His unconditional support makes her feel safe from the cruelty around her. (“Baby, can ya hear me when I'm crying out for you?/I'm scared, oh, so scared/But when you're near me I feel like I'm standing with an army/Of men armed with weapons.”)
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she tells him she wants to wake up every morning with him. She can picture them getting married in a year or two. Her parents remarking to him that he’s the one who saved their daugther. She believes he was sent to her from God to give her a better, fulfilled life. (“I love lying next to you/I could do this for eternity/You and me were meant to be/ In holy matrimony/God knew exactly what he was doing /When he led me to you.”)
The chorus is sung twice to end the single.
Cyrus’ creamy vocals are spread lightly on the notes, not allowing for much flavor. For the first time, she approaches soulful, which can be heard in the chorus and the bridge. However, the single exhausts itself, losing steam within the verses.
The smoky “Adore You” has its spurts of sparks but can’t keep the flame going.
