Thinking of cancelling my pre-order

Thinking of cancelling my pre-order

I still love GalCiv though!

As we get closer to the alpha of GalCiv3, one thought haunts my brain; "no, this is not the way."

First of all let me clarify where I come from. I am thirty years of age and can be considered an old-school gamer. My first "gaming rig" was an Atari 2600. The black plastic one from 1984, also known as the 2600 Junior. After that I got a Super Nintendo Entertainment System. I still remember the smell when I opened the box for the first time and playing Super Mario World for the first time. It's my fondest childhood memory and probably the reason I like physical media so much.

I got my first PC at the end of 1995. It had Windows 95 and a I got a bunch of games for both DOS and Windows. For those of you who don't know; this was the time period where the first 3D accelerators appeared and DirectX was on it's first iteration; it was not the massive beast we know today. My fondest memories of those times were coming home with a new game and opening the box. Believe it or not but most games had printed manuals, some even in colour! There is something about having the box displayed on a shelf, as if it's saying; "Look at me! My owner bought me and is proud of it!"

And that's where that haunting thought comes in. Though I don't have anything against digital distribution, it just doesn't feel right to not have a box standing on the shelf. Something you can hold in your hands and be happy about, thinking; "Yeah, I bought this. It was a good decision.". But that's not the only thing about GalCiv 3's digital distribution that bothers me. From what I've read, you need internet and Steam and that is the most bothersome.

What if I want to play it on a computer without internet and Steam? What if I don't have it installed and lose my internet connection (money problems, moving to Pluto or somewhere else without internet access) ? How will I be able to install the game then?

This troubles me to the extend that I am seriously thinking of trying to cancel my pre-order (if still possible).

(It is also stuff like this that drives me to download an unauthorized copy of a game. Because those, you can install on any computer without internet or Steam.)

I understand it's probably too expensive for Stardock to have physical media but is there any chance we will be able to download the game, burn it on a disc and install it on a computer without an internet connection and Steam? That would make me feel a whole lot more comfortable.

1200 systems? By the time your fleet has gone on its 2 year voyage to reach the enemy territory, it will be horrifically out of date.

Good luck playing THAT fleet.

The ways they have it setup yes, but in term of realilty it far more complex than you think. Its a big universe out there, not all systems are habitable, depend on species. Anyway it does take time to get to point A to B, depending on your knowledges and resources.

Most players probably perfer something small or quick game, some want epic or large scale.

But thats the way GalCiv has been and by the looks of it will be.

The best you can do is select an immense galaxy size and set stars to abundant.

True, but with that many systems i mention would need much larger sectors or grids than they had in GCII. Believe they mention it, but wont be much bigger that i wishes. All we can do is wait and see, btw looking forward to get it :)

@Redindus I can see you are a Distant Worlds player

I briefly tried Distant worlds and I wonder if the scope is not TOO big for my tastes.  I mean, I dont even play the largest galaxies in GalCiv 2. Distant world seems very interesting though but I think I would need to try it some more to get used to how ridiculously huge and complicated it is.  A bit complicated with the game being so expensive. I will consider buying the upcoming Universe Package that is announced apparently for May. If the price is not too crazy.

Distant Worlds isnt that bad, just 2D sprites 4x simulation. I had to do alot of change to that game to make more realistic, the sad parts it wasnt fully moddable. The tech trees is kinda small, i had to push the research cost by 400%. And i didnt bother buying the last expansion "Shadow" wasnt worth it. I am more of Master of Orion type player here.

Looking forward to try out GalCivIII, i know part two was alittle better than the first one.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but you will be able to mod map sizes in Galactic Civilizations 3, meaning you can probably generate much larger maps than what we had before (Immense).

The modding potential for other aspects of the game has also been improved, because much more is being written and coded in XML format instead of hard-coded. Can't wait to see what people will come up with!

Game stores need to switch to a model of selling more digital downloads. Maybe have a card that you can later trade in for money rather than a disc. That card then gets scanned and the product deactivated (but not deleted so you can buy one cheaper later on) from your account.
Not to bad of an idea if I could do that at the store, or make a copy on a cd to install in my game. Not all of us always has the internet. Something I might not have in two months.

You can already buy 'digital' versions of Blizzard titles in Gamestop. You basically just buy a 'card' from which you get Diablo3 or WoW.
ys

Not a bad idea if I could always download from the cards, and not have a account. I bought Skyrim a I think year and a half ago. Forgot I already had a steam account from when I bought Civilization 5. I really would like to play Skyrim which I paid $80 for I have the Cd and serial number. I tried to install the game with the right serial number. The problem is it is a duplicate serial number on an account which I think I know the name that I don't remember the password. My email is either I don't remember, or the account has been discontinued. I would like to think the computer never would crash, or you wouldn't get tired of the game which you would later play after the computer crashed. I think it is funny that the corporations price gouge people who don't have any money. What I need is a program that can store all my accounts. Give me aces to all my accounts from the program, and is online. So I don't have to remember umteen million accounts, so there are no duplicate accounts. Or so I don't forget about an account, so I can have all my games I paid for. This would be superior if  I always had the internet. This is a program that would aces multiple accounts from multiple companies, so I don't have to remember a million accounts which I know I can't do. Please can someone program this it can't possibly be that hard. All you would have to do is start accessing the account only after you clicked on the game that the program would be organized by the game.

i wasnt too happy with the first two. Personally i like Distant Worlds alot better, just need more improvements. If they make or allow to have huge glaxay map like 1200 systems, then i may reconsider. Gonna need map editor and better be modable as well.[/quoteI]

I have mixed emotions on Distant worlds. First it was really hard to download. Appearently they won't let me back into my account, so I'm going to lose this game the next time my computer is going to crash. My expansion never worked you know the one they say is in front of the game.

When I played it I found the Galactopedia to be nice. The tutorial sucked. I was dissappointed on the lack of options when you pick a faction. I don't blame a game when Galactic civilizations has made me spoiled in that area. I like the differential options of species though. I like that they at least attempt to give different species different kinds of governments. I like big galaxies. I like the fact that the fame will reuse factions, and make each one slightly different. .iplomacy not bad not great. I like big galaxies and I cannot lie. I like the map layout. It's unexplorable though. The documentation is lacking when you need to find out how to use the different menu's. If you don't know how to use the menu system it is overwhelming. I love the drop down menus for construction. it's to automated. I don't know if I know the techs well enough. The names need to be better. I love the system maps if they would work better for exploring. Things that are really not existent on distant worlds that would really help the game. Options to pick on random events. They have planetary exploration or only one of the other. They don't have anomolies. They don't have mega events. I think they have artifacts for planetary exploration. The game is more of an upgrade to sins of a solar empire than galactic civilizations. I like to planet menu. That is probably the only one I found exceptional. Maybe I need to learn the game better. To bad they don't have a better tutorial or documentation. To sum it up I like the fact that is is a really big game with lots of reusability on factions, but it is lacking next to Galactic civilizations on almost everything else.

At first when i got DW, i wasnt too happy with it. So i manage to change portaits and some infos about that species. Yes the tutorial does suck and many players had to go over several times to get a hang of it, then make a new game. I was pretty fond with GCII, but its lack of spaces and something else was missing, it been awhile and not sure what it was.

The alpha build of the game is being released in a few days on March 27th, which means the beta is probably 5-6 months after that. The final game will likely be released sometime in Q1 or Q2 2015.

Cool thank you, i was say at least a year. Btw i tried to located several mods i made for GCII and DW, but look like it got deleted :(

Something i did to enhance it, beleive i have backup on DW somewhere on dvd, hard to believe Matrix got my mod deleted. I was trying to find a way to load up portait they way they hardcoded the game. So i remember using .xml and load the pic from directory rather than they did. Funny no one was able to figure it out til i brought it up and i had to explain how i did. When others started to work on their mods, most of them just copy my ideas without even say thank you lol.

Anyway i just like better portaits and graphics, rather than cartoonish.

Here another mod i made for Fallen Enchantress-LH, what it does is when you recruit a group of unit that has three scouts, it will pull three population points from that settlement. Most games i have modded, is mostly to improve it and adding more realism into it. I just like complex and realistic stuffs.

Hard to say, there alot of DW fans wasnt quite happy with the last expansion. So that why i waited and see what happen and look like it hasnt been improve much. There still glitches in there. When i was playing it, i dont like using the private sectors, since they dont alway do their jobs right. If not careful while expanding too fast, you will lose your fuel reserved.

You can however make state to do mining and fueling, but its pain in macromanagement! I have done it, i even use resupply ships as explorer. After you get around 5-8k carlson (fuel) you can go on explore without refueling for five years and explore vast areas. The weird parts about DW is the private sectors and still bugged, but playable.

Distant Worlds uses the worst digital distribution system on the entire planet, so far as gaming is concerned. Steam is a saint in comparison.

(Microsoft's old home buyer program for Office was even worse, but I don't have access to it now so I don't know if they fixed it.)

Do you remember where StarDock mentioned this?

And don't forget, the game will be validating any mods, purely out of self defense in what it can handle, if for no other reason.

No, but it was Brad. He said something along the lines of "We're letting players mod much more this time around, from anomalies to events to mapsizes..."

(Cue Guanathor with relevant quote)

I recall also reading some ( I think it was from Brad ) about the decision to require 64bit systems for the game. That it was about increasing the limit of what the engine was capable of, and IIRC map size was cited as an exemple.

Currently a hex sector, has a 12 hex radius, so there are 397 hexes per sector, which is a bit larger than a 16x16 GC2 sector. The smallest galaxy is currently 7 sectors. The largest we will leave as a surprise, for later. These values are all set out in data, that modders will have access to later, which should be fun.

That said this is something we will be tweaking for quite a while, but it gives you some ideas. We even have a few things up our sleeves that no one has guessed at yet.

Interesting. Am I reading this correctly? Am I missing something? It looks like mormegil is saying that modders will have access to the size of the current galaxy, which I can understand may be needed for some decisions a mod's logic may have to make, but he doesn't say explicitly that a mod can alter the galaxy's size.

Edit -- I forgot about mapping out a new galaxy as part of a mod.

No, that's indeed what he's saying--you can mod the size settings for random maps.

Hey NitrosX infinity are you still there, or did you decide to cancel your preorder!

Editing the size of the map should make for some good mods. I would also like to know can we change the number of factions allowed on the game I would like to see something like 32 or op more major factions on the game playable or not. Non playable opponents would probably be great for mods. Also one other thing I would like to see added to modability is multiple leaders with different abilities for different factions. I may not mod, but I would like to see what other people do with this. If you add a better editor than last time I would probably make some scenarios though.
