PC Gamer's First Preview of Galactic Civilizations III

PC Gamer's First Preview of Galactic Civilizations III

PC Gamer has put up the first preview of Galactic Civilizations III and talks with Lead Designer Paul Boyer about the game.

"Many of the familiar races from the game, such as the Krynn Consulate and the Iconian Refuge, will return alongside new races. The Iridium Corporation, for instance, was always part of the series’ lore but never a playable race. Boyer notes that “they are essentially ultra-capitalists, like if Apple was a race that was going to take over the universe”.

Other tweaks include revamping the UI, building a better tutorial system (including a tutorial campaign), and finetuning the AI, all within the confines of a brand-new game engine, referred to internally as Kumquat 2. Also new is the fact that Galactic Civilizations III will only run on 64-bit systems."

Does this preview mean that the alpha version is already out?

I'm afraid we'll have to wait at least 1 or 2 more months, perhaps even longer :)

Well, time for some sleep here in old Norway, chaps. Time to dream about GalCiv3. I'll explore that screenshot map in my sleep, expand on it and create my own great GalCiv3 stories. I'll close my eyes with a smile arround my face thanks to reading this splendid article just in time before bed time. Good night lads. :)

I'm going to ask for a better interface to the founder's assets.

looks awesome

I know this is a little off topic, but why do I keep getting a persistent prompt from pcgamer.com for my windows security login user/pass? Ive tried to google it but no help; im using IE 11 browser and no matter how many times I click cancel the prompt reappears and wont let me do anything except close my browser from task manager. I had to switch to my phone using safari (which did have the prompt but I could cancel it once and continue) to even read the entire article.

I'm getting it with FireFox as well, but it allows me to cancel it (like you had with Safari). I think the website for pcgamer is doing it. Perhaps there is more you can see on that site if you are a member. Also, I switched to FireFox some time ago because of other problems I had with IE.

So, what makes them different from the Korx then?

In any case, I like the new UI. It looks pretty good. Everything is clear, and easily accessible on first sight. However, I will retain final judgment until after I tested it.

The Ideology mechanic also sounds quit interesting. When Frogboy mentioned it, I imagined something like the Social Engineering mechanic from SMAX, but this could be even better.

I always thought of the Korx as being like the Ferengi while Iridium Corp. is more like Buy and Large from Wall-E.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that the Korx were based off of Star Control's Druuge?

One thing I'm not sure I like in that UI is the little glow surrounding all of the ships.

I'm getting the prompt too. Shouldn't be a problem for chrome and firefox browsers.   More evidence that IE sucks.  make the switch

I saw no such prompt.  Noscript is your friend, my friend.  Seriously, best plugin ever (well, might be a close tie w/ adblock plus or BetterPrivacy).  Why anyone would want to actually run all the random script-spam on all the websites is beyond me.

Needless to say, it pretty much also destroys any uniqueness to your visit:

test it out w/ panopticlick.eff.org

Some more new goodies have been added here: https://www.galciv3.com/founders [/quote]

I hope you guys are going to run spell/grammar check before the full release ;p

typo on the UI_Diplomacy.jpg screenie - "The Terran Alliance is very interest in establishing..." needless to say, this should be "is very interested in establishing..."

Seriously though, it's all looking very nice - thanks for all the hard work you do!

cheers,

I saw the prompt yesterday. Now that I'm back on my PC with tools to see what's actually triggering it, I can't get it to reappear. Maybe they fixed it.

I don't like these extra eyes Irydium leader has.

Found the cause of the password prompt. For some reason something on that page is trying to access http://www.pcgamer.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php , which is password protected.

Just an error on someone's part at PC Gamer.

Can't wait.  Screen shots are looking mighty juicy indeed.

I have one concern looking at the first screen shot and the production status of each planet.  I noticed that the one production status indicator shows either what ship is being built or what improvement is being built.  I hope this doesn't mean we have to choose whether we are to build a ship or an improvement...ie FE:LH.

I just waited for somebody to notice that one. ;)

I indeed enjoyed the GalCiv2 economical model, but I'm not opposing new ways to look upon it. Building one thing at the time at a planet might add to strategy, if the economical model is changed. I'd reserve any judgements on the matter for the time being.

I agree, I didn't mean to condemn the game if they went to a different economic model, but I really enjoyed the dual production queues in GalCivII.

That would be very much appreciated. It's starting to look a bit messy!

By the way I'm really enjoying the full screen diplomacy screen. It looks much better especially if it's going to be animated like you said. Looks nicer than Civ5 diplo screens as well! It would be a real hoot if the leaders also spoke. They don't have to speak their native tongue as the universal translator can interpret it, but please add a spoken "Smetz keala et kula drinena est tu estharwa!".  |-)

Oh one other thing about the aliens, as cool as they look in still shots, they are fully animated.  They look just insane when on the view screen.

That is awesome! That is one thing i really enjoyed in Civilization V.  the way the civ's are animated, and facial expressions and gestures change as does their attitude.

I really hope, that you guys get creative on what aliens constitute happiness/anger/fear.. ect

One race could pound their firsts, another might flail their arms, another might just snear..   could really have some fun with this aspect of the game.
