[1.4 + Dead] Thread for suggestions on balancing/improving Dead
I really like the idea of the Dead, but they are ultimately not really workable as is. The principal problem - pioneer spam by other nations. Other nations can spit out pioneers and population so quickly that have a ton more cities than you as the Dead and, in turn, they can spit out much more powerful units due to the technology and production advantages. Thus, even if you declare war on anyone close by early, which you have to do, you aren't able to easily win the unit war (I basically have to run around my one overpowered Sovereign Mage and kill the enemy units with buffed up lightning bolts). Play the game on harder levels and forget about it. The Dead can be fun, but only if you want to play with a severe handicap. I mean, already as the Dead you will really NEVER be able to build things like the Mercantross Bazaar because you take forever to get a town to the second level.
Furthermore, I have played countless games since the Monday patch, and the AI has NO idea how to play the Dead. I have seen the AI Dead remain hovering around 10 power for half a game if they aren't eliminated. This is very common.
So, I thought I'd open the floor to suggestions. I think something needs to be done about the early game to balance them a little better. I for one think that just about ANY mobs you attack should add population. If killing wildings, bears, and other living creatures also fed the Dead army, which makes sense, I think it would be a bit easier to keep up early. I think the AI might do a bit better with the Dead faction too. Just a thought.
