Music Review: Enrique Iglesias "Heart Attack"

Enrique Iglesias

Heart Attack

Album: N/A

Year: 2013

Enrique Iglesias realizes he should’ve paid more attention to his girlfriend in the plastic “Heart Attack.”

A hasty guitar starts the single, setting a  frustrated tone.  She was such an angel. Sweet and polite, she would rather stay at home and watch a movie with him than go out to the club. He would give her a kiss before he went to work in the morning. He would tell her he would see her later. Usually, he would meet up with friends from work or from the bar. However, it was comforting knowing she was at home, waiting for him. While he was with his friends, though, he would show them pictures of her and talk about her. (“Loving you was easy/Thought you'd never leave me/Wrapped around my finger/See you when I see you.”)

In the pre-chorus, a friend of his took him aside a couple days ago and told him that he saw her out at a restraurant with another guy. He was feeding her and they left holding hands. He started crying, not knowing how strong his feelings for her were until then. Maybe if he told her “I love you” more, perhaps she would’ve stayed. It’s his own self-involvement that caused her to cheat. (“Now I'm hearing around/That you've been running around/I didn't think I'd miss you/Now I'm feeling like a fool.”)

In the chorus, when he found out the news, he couldn’t breathe. He believed if the relationship was ever over, he would be able to go on unaffected. Nonetheless, he finds himself thinking calling her and apologizing. She’s a part of his life and he doesn’t want to lose her. (“It hit me like a heart attack, when you finally left me girl/I thought I’d never want you back/But I don't wanna live in a world without you/I don't wanna live in a world without you/I don't wanna live in a world without you.”)

She would always take days off from work for him. She’d remember he didn’t like chili and stopped eating it, even though she loved it. Not once did he show his appreciation for her. He put his friends first, spending the weekends mostly with them. (“Never really noticed/All the little things you did (you did)/Never bought you roses/Always was around my friends (my friends.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, he let his friends become top priority. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been able to cheat on him. Discretion wasn’t even necessary for her. Now, he prefers to stay home by himself in his dirty sweats and watch channel surf.. He doesn’t want to see anyone or talk to anyone. He’d rather dwell on his own stupidity until the aching goes away.  (“Never should've let you slipped away/Living in a world that's turned to grey/Little did I know it hurt so bad.”)

               The chorus is sung again.

              The bridge is sung again.

              The chorus is sung again.

The pre-chorus is sung again to end the single.

Iglesias’ shrinking vocals give off static from the vocoder, standing them straight up in a brittle line. He takes the blame for everything and regrets not doing more. However, he’s a mopey, self-loathing late thirtysomething guy with intimacy issues who hasn’t grown up yet. It’s surprising he was able to let himself feel some sort of emotion.

The dull “Heart Attack” can’t generate a pulse.
