Music Review: Jason Derulo "Marry Me"

Jason Derulo

Marry Me

Album: Tattoos

Year: 2013

Marriage seems to be my unintentional theme this week.  I figured I got two songs in for this week might as well add another. I didn’t realize “Did It Again” was about an affair until I read the lyrics.

Jason Derulo proposes to his girlfriend in the gentlemanly “MarryMe.”

A mushy piano opens the single, setting a lovesick tone.  He looks through his linen drawers and finds another blanket on the top of the shelf. From the hallway, he hears the high-pitched “choo” and he calls out “bless you!” With a hoarse voice, she responds “thank you.” He wraps the blanket around her and asks her if she needs anything. She shakes her head no and puts her head on the pillow. Her wet cough reverberates throughout his family room. He doesn’t like the cough she has. If it keeps up, he’ll take her to the doctor tomorrow. He could see himself taking care of her at 90, helping her walk or feeding her. Taking care of someone is a part of loving them. He wants to feel cold feet under the covers and nudge her with his toes and then see her in the morning, her hair sticking up in odd places.  (“105 is the number that comes to my head/When I think of all the years I wanna be with you/Wake up every morning with you in my bed/That’s precisely what I plan to do.”)

In the pre-chorus, once he gets a better job, he would like to fufill her dream of traveling Spain. He’ll be able to take her out to four star restraurants and let her have whatever she wants. He realizes that while they have time together, he should ask her to  be his wife sooner than later. Before they know it, she’ll be past childbearing age and a health issue could affect him.(“And you know one of these days when I get my money right/Buy you everything and show you all the finer things in life/Will forever be enough, so there ain’t no need to rush/But one day, I won’t be able to ask you loud enough.”)

In the chorus, he asks her to be a part of his life forever. (“I’ll say will you marry me/I swear that I will mean it/I’ll say will you marry me.”)

Derulo “oh whoa’s” for a couple seconds.

He can’t imagine even wanting to date someone else. She’s the one who makes him feel whole. Every day, he discovers something about her that amazes him. (“How many girls in the world can make me feel like this?/Baby I don’t ever plan to find out/The more I look, the more I find the reasons why/You’re the love of my life.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, his house could end up in foreclosure, his savings depleted from multiple mortagages and loans. However, as long as she’s with him, he will be able to recover. This weekend, he’ll go the jeweler’s and try to find the perfect ring for her. (“And if I lost everything/In my heart it means nothing/‘Cause I have you, girl I have you/So get right down on bended knee/Nothing else would ever be/Better, better/The day when I say.”)

              The chorus is sung twice.

             Derulo “oh’s” for a bit.

The first verse is sung again to close the single.

Derulo’s heartfelt vocals lay his feelings out in the open for her to see. He wants to her to know what she means to him. It would be an honor for him to have her live in his home and learn the all the details that make him who he is. All he needs to hear is yes.

The picuresque “Marry Me” has the makings of a happily ever after.
