Music Review: Luke Bryan "That's My Kind of Night"
Luke Bryan
That’s My Kind of Night
Album: Crash My Party
Year: 2013
Luke Bryan spends the day on his boat, fishing and making out with a girl in the belligerent “That’s My Kind of Night.”
A posturing bass and a grunt open the single, setting a dubious tone. With her tiny min-skirt barely covering her butt and thigh high boots, she seems to be the type to indulge every once in awhile. He pats the seat for emphasis and winks at her. He then points at his cooler and demands she give him a beer. (“I got that real good feel good stuff/Up under the seat of my big black jacked up truck/Rollin' on 35s/Pretty girl by my side/You got that suntan skirt and boots/Waiting on you to look my way and scoot/Your little hot self over here/Girl hand me another beer, yeah!”)
In the chorus, he says outright he’s not interested in taking her out on any formal dates. Judging by her looks, he thinks he has her pegged as a promiscuous girl who doesn’t have any limits. He says they’ll smoke some weed and fish. Then, at nightfall, they’ll camp out and have sex. No strings attached, though. (“All them other boys wanna wind you up and take you downtown/But you look like the kind that likes to take it way out/Out where the corn rows grow, row, row my boat/Floatin’ down the Flint River, catch us up a little catfish dinner/Gonna sound like a winner, winner when I lay you down and love you right /Yeah, that’s my kind of night!”)
He’ll set up his barbecue and play some of his favorite songs. He grew up listening to Conway Twitty but he loves T-Pain. He says they can skinny dip later. She “hmms” but he nudges her and scoffs at her so-called modesty. (“Might sit down on my diamond plate tailgate/Put in my country rock hip-hop mixtape/Little Conway, a little T-Pain, might just make it rain/You can hang your t-shirt on a limb/Hit that bank and we can ease on in/Soak us up a little moonlight/You know I know what you like, yeah!”)
The chorus is sung again with an extra “that’s my kind of night” added.
In the bridge, he says it’s a balmy evening perfect for drunken hookups. (“My kind of your kind of its this kind of night/We dance in the dark and your lips land on mine/Gonna get our love on/Time to get our buzz on.”)
The second chorus is sung again.
Bryan adds two “yeah, that’s my kind of night” and says “come on” to end the single.
Bryan’s pressuring vocals over enunciate each of his words in the verses, just in case she didn’t get the point the first time. He’s the one who’s calling the shots. She’s simply there for her good looks. As an avid listener of hip hop, he’s managed to glean that objectifying women is ok. He has also learned to manipulate his sweet country boy charm. Nonetheless, somewhere on Youtube there’s an incriminating video of him boasting about a conquest waiting to be found.
The appalling “That’s My Kind of Night” tries to be a badass as it bullies to get its way.
