Live For The Night

Album: Get Wet

Year: 2013

Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf close the club in the squalid “Live For The Night.”

Tawdry synths open the single, setting a low grade  tone. The chorus starts the single. Laser lights are swirling as the Yousafs dance. While DJ lets the beat hit its crescendo, another burst of energy gushes through their lungs. Their, intoxication protects them feeling any cramps as the vodka soaked veins highlight each moment. (“I live for the night, I live for the lights/I live for the high ’til I’m free falling/I live for the night, I live for the lights/I live for the high ’til I’m free falling (falling, falling, falling)/‘Til I’m free falling (falling)/I live for the night.”)

A spooked beat scatters, uncertain of where to go.

Every sentence ends with a squeak. Hoarse from yelling, Jahan admires her boyfriend’s right arm as he orders from the bar. Starting from his wrist to his shoulder is a leafy vine decorated with gothic crosses. His voice begins to raise and she rushes, trying to smooth things over with the bartender. They ran out of out whiskey, he tells her and then the bartender won’t put the rest of their drinks on his tab. She pulls out her change purse and reaches for some money but he tells he to stop. It’s going on his tab and that’s it. Back at the table, Yasmin waits for the server to clear all the glasses. After they have their shots, it’s time to get back on the dancefloor. (“Scream, tryin’ to holler/Got that ink up on my collar/Drinkin’ ’til there’s nada/Is there whiskey, I don’t bother/My bitch, this ain’t no time, save your ************ dollars/
So we stack our drinks up high, skyscrapin’ ’til we taller/Ring ring, da da, show that universal love/If you play that record, dance until you get enough/Ring ring, da da, show that universal love/If you play that record, dance until you get enough.”)

In the pre-chorus, they don’t intend to get home until 6 am. There is too much going on at night to sleep through it. (“I’mma do what I want, whatever/I’mma rage ’til the dawn, all-nighter/Don’t hold your breath/You’ll know I’ll sleep when I am dead.”)

            The chorus is sung again.

When they are not out clubbing, they are creating beats. They have a following and people have told them they can relax to their music. It’s what they have wanted. They have a motto: split the ears and do some damage. (“I’m the Grim Reaper when I’m blaring out your speaker/Chilling off the week welcome to the final feature/My head is in the clouds, you can say that I’m a dreamer/But I bang it super loud, turn my bitch into a screamer.”)

          The pre-chorus is sung again.

The chorus is sung twice to end the single.

The Yousafs’ savage, deadened vocals are inhuman, disconnected from any thought or emotion. The voices are there but no actual communication to the brain of the body that inhabits it.

The vampiric “Live For the Night” lacks a soul, sucking on the dated beats of the DJs left who have crossed their path.
