Made In TheUSA
Album: Demi
Year: 2013
Demi Lovato dates a golden boy in the declarative “Made In The USA.”
A pleasant guitar opens the single, setting a lovesick tone. She was sitting on a chair, sipping water while on break from playing tennis. Her best friend nodded to her, whispering to her that the young man on the next court was coming over. She quickly dabbed her face with a towel and brushed off her skirt. Through her parents, she found out that he was the son a wealthy businessman, a successful athlete at his private school and currently available. She liked him but even as he said “hello” to her, she could only mumble in response. A few tennis games later, they had their first date at the country club’s restaurant. She discovered that he appreciated his wealth and gave back to his community by volunteering at soup kitchens. He valued his education and drove a modest car. Then, one evening, his hands sweaty in hers, he told her he was falling for her. She gave him a kiss. Anytime they go somewhere, he won’t let her touch the door. He steps a little bit of ahead of her and opens it for her. He compliments her, telling her she’s important to him. (“Our love runs deep like a Chevy/If you fall I'll fall with you baby/Cause that's the way we like to do it/That's the way we like/You run around open doors like a gentleman/Tell me “Girl, every day you're my everything/Cause that's the way you like to do it/That's the way you like.”)
In the pre-chorus, they drive aroundLos Angelesin his convertible, heading towards the beach. They spend the afternoon talking and laughing, not even noticing the time until the sun is setting. (“Just a little West Coast, and a bit of sunshine/Hair blowing in the wind, losing track of time/Just you and I, just you and I.”)
In the chorus, she’s crazy about her boyfriend and doesn’t want to hide it. She will do whatever she has to do to keep the relationship going. Her parents are calling it a summer romance. Her friends say they’ll break up once school starts. However, they have a love that rivals Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook. (“No matter how far we go, I want the whole world to know/I want you bad, and I won’t have it any other way/No matter what the people say,I know that we'll never break/Cause our love was made, made in the USA/Made in the USA, yeah.”)
In their short time of dating, he learned to read her expressions well, sensing if something was wrong right away if she turned her eyes downward. He has seen her upset and realizes in the moment, she needs someone to hold her. She would hate to see him become disillusioned one day by people who are only out to use him or judge him by his name. (“You always reading my mind like a letter/When I'm cold, you're there like a sweater/Cause that's the way we like to do it/That's the way we like/And I’ll never let the world get the best of you/Every night we're apart, I'm still next to you/Cause that's the way I like to do it/That's the way I like.”)
In the second pre-chorus, he surprised her one evening with a private jet plane that would take them to New York. In one of his father’s buildings, they had dinner as watched as the snowflakes dotted the city’s skyline. They held hands walking down Times Squareand took in a Broadway show. (“We touch down on the east coast/Dinner in the sky rise, winter is the best time for walking in the city lights/You and I, you and I.”)
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, if anyone calls him a trust fund baby, she stands up for him. In the end, if they do break up and she gets hurt, at least she tried. (“Cause baby I'll bite the bullet/And take the blow for love/Our love was made in the USA/Made in theUSA, made in theUSA.”)
The chorus is sung again.
At the end of the single, she repeats the title. (“Made in the U.S./Made in the U.S./Made in theU.S.A.”)
Lovato’s ardent, believing vocals are dedicated, stopping rumors before they start and holding up against any criticism. Like most classic American romantic movies, she’s the character who narrates the story, taking care of her partner into old age after defying the numerous odds to be together.
The solid “Made In The USA” is tailor made for the end credits of a teen romance.
