Best Song Ever
Album: Where We Are
Year: 2013
A young woman has captured the attention of Harry Styles in the elated “Best Song Ever.”
Pumped up guitars open the single, setting a nostalgic tone. Google has been useless. Styles has typed in a bunch of lyrics and nothing familiar comes up in the search engine. The words match a dozens songs. The young woman’s face is clear in his mind, though. He and his friends were commenting on how lame the dance was and had run of things to mock. Then, he stopped walking to watch the young woman. She paused, her head making slight turns, scanning the crowd for someone. He was struck by her charisma and confidence. (“Maybe it's the way she walked/Straight into my heart and stole it/Through the doors and past the guards/Dressed like she already owned it.”)
In the pre-chorus Zayn Malik heads straight for her, leaving his puzzled friends behind, and tells her he has his heart. A playful smirk crosses her face and she responds that it’s finder’s keepers. (“I said "can you give it back to me?"/She said "never in your wildest dreams")
The all join in for the chorus. The DJ begins begin to play a slow song. He puts her hands around her and they began to sway. They whispered the words to each other as they danced. It was a song they both heard millions of times on the radio. (“And we danced all night to the best song ever/We knew every line now I can't remember/How it goes but I know that I won't forget her/Cause we danced all night to the best song ever/I think it went oh, oh, oh/I think it went yeah, yeah, yeah/I think it goes oh.”)
Liam Payne says after the dance she introduced herself. She just moved into the area. Her dad opened up his own dentistry practice. Styles continues to say that she calls him out on his bad boy reputation but it’s something she can handle. (“Said her name was Georgia Rose/And her daddy was a dentist/Said I had a dirty mouth (I got a dirty mouth)/But she'd kiss me like she meant it.”)
In the pre-chorus, Niall Horn takes it as opening and says his parents aren’t home. She’s more than welcome to spend the night at his place. The playful smirk returns and as she tells him no, hinting there could be a someday. (“I said "Can I take you home with me?"/She said "never in your wildest dreams.”)
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, Louis Tomlinson says he won’t ever forget her. Malik hopes the memory is as special to her as it was to him. (“You know, I know, you know I'll remember you/And I know, you know, I know you'll remember me/And you know, I know, you know I'll remember you/And I know, you know, I hope you'll remember how we danced/How we danced.”)
The chorus is sung twice.
At the end, Malik reiterates that the song was awesome. (“Best song ever/It was the best song ever/ It was the best song ever/ It was the best song ever.”)
One Direction’s gabby, joking vocals give high-fives all around. They divulge every detail, dwelling on the song, acknowledging with a nudge and a wink that they aren’t the type to bring home to mom. But they are willing to make the exception just this once. Maybe.
Was it a 80s power ballad? Or mid-90s new jack swing love song? The retro “Best Song Ever’s” only interesting element is guessing what the mystery song could be , dig it out and listen to it instead.
