Music Review: Tiffany "Danny"

Danny
Album: Tiffany
Year: 1987
Tiffany tries to get through to her uncommunicate boyfriend in the imploring “Danny.”
A concerned synthesizer opens the single, setting an inquiring tone. She has her head laying on her boyfriend’s chest. She raises her head to give him a kiss. He pecks her on the lips and gets his remote for the television. As he flips throug the stations, she thought it would’ve been the perfect night to reconnect again. His parents were gone for the weekend and they would be alone. However, each time she tried to make out with him, he would turn his head away and apologize. She frowns, holding back tears as he cracks up at the sitcom. She must have done something to cause him not to like her anymore. Eventually, it’s going to lead to a breakup. Whatever is bothering him, she wishes he would share it with her. It’s damaging their relationship. (“Here in the dark/ Silence is much to hard to bear/Don't know there to start/I'm hurtin' everywhere/If we don't stop now/We're gonna lose/We should try somehow/'Cause it's too easy to bruise.”)
In the chorus, she can’t understand why every conversation ends with a pointed remark. He shoots down any of her suggestions. While they still do go out, he he doesn’t even acknowledge her. Is he hurt by something she said? Is something going on with his family? It’s a major problem. He’s punishing her for an unknown reason, causing her to become withdrawn. (“When you take your mark/Danny with your aim/Danny for my heart/It's only pain/What does it prove/Again and again?/Danny nobody wins.”)
She theorizes he could be ashamed of telling her about it. She sits up on the couch and turns the television off with the remote. She assures him he can talk to her about whatever is on his mind. They can work it out and salvage what they have. She explains she would hate to run into him ten years later at the grocery store and see a broken man. (“If it's your pride, Promise you won't let it keep us apart/Deep down inside, We can make a new start/If we don't look back, On the price we pay/Well that's all I ask/Cause we'll never make it this way.”)
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she urges him to think of the future. (“Danny don't/Danny don't look back/On the price we pay/Well that's all I ask/'Cause we'll never make it this way.”)
The chorus is sung three times to end the single.
Tiffany’s capable, cool vocals are focused, weighing each word she says to him as she fights to save the relationship.
The articulate “Danny,” considered teenybop for its era, addresses a teen relationship with an adult point of view, giving it an edge unseen in today’s acts.
