Recruiting New Dev Team Members!

Recruiting New Dev Team Members!

Hello, I am the founder of a brand new SINS developing team and we are open to recruiting!

---The Team---

Name: Sinful Studios

Project Title: Protocol 117

Project Description: In the events between Halo 3 and Halo 4, obviously much has changed. There is greater division in the Covenant and the Spartan IV program has revolutionized the UNSC. In Protocol 117, the story of everything that happened in the absence of the Master Chief is revealed.

Some Intended Features:

  • Addition of a Campaign
  • Replacement/Addition of playable factions including: UNSC, Insurrectionists, Covenant, Heretics, Forerunners, and Promethians
  • Flood in place of Pirates

We currently consist of 3 members (including myself) and are in need of anyone who can do the following:

  • 3D Modeling
  • Texturing
  • 2D Animation and/or Video Editing (for custom introduction movie and credits)
  • Particle Effects Creation/Editing
  • Sound Effects Creation/Editing

If you are interested in any of these, send me a private message with the application form below filled out and I will get back to you ASAP.

---A Little About Me---

I am an avid Halo Fan and thought this could be a great mod for SINS. Yes, I know of the existence of Sins of the Prophets, but since we have the same inspiration, there will be many similarities between the mods, but none of our concepts have been derived from their mod.

I am 18 years old. (I just figured I'd get that out there since I'm requesting your age in the application.)

I am more than capable of changing the entities, manifests, etc. and making sure everything functions internally. I have 2 years of personal programming experience and 1 year of professional programming experience and am finishing my studies for my A+ Certification (if that counts for anything here). I can also create installers so that adding the mod is easier (mainly for people who aren't adept at adding mods for their games), though I know making an installer isn't exactly hard.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

---The Application---

-COPY AND PASTE-

Desired Department:

Years/Months of experience: (rough estimate; ie: 4 years /or/ 10 months)

Are you currently or have you previously been part of any other modding teams?: (yes/no)

If so, who?: (list all; ie: "My Mod Team" - Current, "My Previous Mod Team" - 2 years ago)

Which mods did they develop?: (Must have been publicly released as at least a BETA, otherwise do not list it)

Which part(s) of those mods did you work on?:

Age:

Email: (Optional; preferably gmail, but not required)

Skype: (Optional)

-END-

---Other Stuff---

To be officially part of the team, we need to be able to keep in regular contact which is why I ask for your email and/or Skype. However, if you still want to help but cannot promise regular contact (for whatever reason), message me anyway. We won't turn you away just because you can't offer as much as someone else can. Don't think that not being officially part of the team will not earn recognition. Any and all contributions to our project will be recognized.

The reason I'd prefer you to have Gmail is so it's easier to share larger files by using Google Drive.

NOTE: Your computer MUST meet the RECOMMENDED Requirements to play Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion to effectively debug issues with the project. It is assumed that you have the latest version of the game.

If you have any questions/comments, please post respectfully or send me a private message (preferably a PM if it is a comment and a post if it is a question). I don't appreciate it when people make harsh comments concerning my posts. I do my best to show everyone here respect so please show that respect in return.

I'll quote what I said when Halo Sins of Faith popped up for about a week or so on ModDB.

And we have no ill will towards this mod either. So don't harass them on our behalf. Competition is good in the marketplace. They may make something better than we can and we'll all end up playing that instead. Let the chips fall as they may.

I had a laugh because I think OP is unrealistic about the time development takes, but Sparda's comment about our dev time is also not accurate. We literally started remodeling the whole game from scratch. We had a nearly complete playable version that just wasn't up to our standard/used models from older games.

Let me give OP a little advice for making a Halo mod:

  • Due to changes to Microsoft's legal stuff regarding their intellectual property, you can't use the word "Halo" in your name, so it may be time to come up with something more descriptive unless you like C&D's.
  • Most Halo fans that will find you are fairly young. Try your best not to rage on them and be helpful, because apparently many of them don't know how to computer at all.
  • If you want to earn said Halo fan's respect, be sure to stay as close to the source material as possible.
  • Do NOT ride your new dev members hard to finish projects quickly, many have personal lives that are complicated and you should respect that if you want quality work from them.
  • Come up with a clear vision of your mod and try not to let outside sources change it unless they are amazingly good ideas, because you'll be given a lot of advice from fans, many of which have never touched SoaSE before now.
  • If you want talent you're going to have to go out and find it. This kind of post isn't going to attract the people you need, for the most part. You'll need to go where the talent congregates. If you want modelers you'll have to go to modeling forums like Sci-Fi meshes, so on and so forth.

Also, just to make it clear, if you do release something we'll be sure to look around and see if anything looks too familiar, if you know what I mean.

Best of luck! Be sure to post screenshots of your progress!

This may seem like a small/insignificant point but I would like to emphasize it. Projects don't need idea people. Formulate your vision and stick to it. If you at any point doubt yourself, figure out the doubt and conquer it. One of the critical aspects to managing a team, large or small, or a solo project, is to not simply devote to your vision but also harness that vision.

Up until Retribution I never planned anything out. I never needed to. I work on a system of outsourcing. I knew people who, at some point, knew I might make a request from them. Odd jobs, like voice acting, or having someone build a java script to batch rename Brood War frames. All production was kept entirely private except for minor bullet point updates and the rare internal video. Occasionally people made suggestions which were considered at best. Most suggestions will never fit into your plan, but ideas have alternate merit to them. Do not ever feel obligated to the opinions of others, however. Build your project for yourself.

Talent is forged, not born. Give life to the forge of Creation through challenge and independence.

1) I understand that, but at the same time, I don't really know where to look at this point  :\ I've been asking around my school and very few people there have the abilities I'm looking for. I even started by going to the Graphic Design classes (which is primarily what I need) and had surprisingly little success.

2) I figured as much, but I believe you won't find anything like that

3) Thanks, and we will =)

On a separate note, I was actually part of the team for Sins of Faith, but that team bailed on the project (still not completely sure why) so I took the initiative to bring it back. That's part of how I got the name for this project.

So, if anyone DOES know some good places to start looking (internet or otherwise), that's be awesome. Just saying. I know that finding a graphics design guy or even a guy who's interested in doing this isn't exactly going to be easy.

Indeed, it is very difficult. Despite doing this for a while I haven't really ever gotten more than a minor thing or two from "graphics artists". As a result, I've had to teach my self virtually all of it so, despite a lack of talent, I can do the grunt work and hope to get something I really need from someone who has actual talent.  ;)  That and I learned to be flexible and take advantage of anything and everything that is already available for use on the web (with permission), but that might be hard as you want a specifically Halo project and I'm guessing there isn't as many models just available for use as as Star Wars.

DeviantArt, Sci-Fi Meshes, ModDB, CGHub, Google Image Search if you know how to internet well.

And just to reiterate, the name "Halo Ressurection" WILL get you into legal trouble with M$, as it is against their licensing terms.

As i said before You will need to learn some basics in Modding,  Art, and 3d modeling. Stick to your vision, and if people like what you are doing. Then the help will come to you in time.

Thanks for the support everyone. I really appreciate it. Also, I'm sticking to the name for now. I still doubt I'll get any C&D letters from Microsoft since I'm not going to be making money on this. But should they begin to appear, I'll reconsider.

And thanks to ZombiesRus5. I will talk to him/her when I get the chance.

Microsoft will go after you regardless of whether it's for profit or not. If you get a C&D, you won't be able to continue, regardless of what you do. So you may want to reconsider that decision.

Game Content licensing terms from http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/developer/rules

In addition, your Items may not use the name of the Microsoft Game in their title. For example, we don't object to "Red vs. Blue". We don't object to "Operation Chastity". But we do object to "Halo [insert the title of your Item here]". We want to make sure consumers don't get confused.

Along those same lines, please don't use actual logos from the Microsoft Game as part of your Item's logos.

Ah, I see. That makes more sense now.

Since I have no choice in the matter, I'll be renaming the project soon. Thanks sjloosecannon for showing me that. I didn't even realize that was there. I figured it didn't matter since it wasn't for profit.

And to everyone who said it before him, I apologize for not investigating the matter further.

Microsoft thinks consumers are too stupid to tell the difference between free mods and official Halo games....

They generally are.

At the same time though, if a bunch of people made games with "Halo" at the beginning of it's title, and I'm sure there are lots of people who want to do that, it'd be hard to differentiate between the official and unofficial games.

One example being the Slenderman games. There are an unknown number of indie games with Slender in the title. As far as I know, there is only one "official" Slenderman title - Slender: The Arrival by Blue Isle Studios. You could possibly add Slender: The Eight Pages to that list of "official" games, but that's highly debatable since it's a free game and has no story.

The list of indie games relating to Slenderman include:

*Slender Space

*Slender: The Nine Pages

*Haunt: The Real Slender Game

*Slender Man's Shadow

And many others.

Anyway, this title change is not of major concern to us at the moment. This is simply an interesting obstacle, as the name we had originally conceived had correlation to the story in a certain way, but now we must think of a new project title to catch people's attention while still being an obvious Halo Mod.

Sins of the Forerunners ?

Sins of the Prophets already taken

Yes myfist0, I know. I stated that in my original Post.

But here's the major difference between the two Mods: we will have a Campaign. And there will more than likely be various other differences that will distinguish the two. Like I said, there will be a lot of similarities, but I promise they are not the same thing.

I wish you the best of luck in getting a campaign running in Sins considering the game lacks a lot of the coding needed to support one (triggers or other scripting, for example).

Probably the best you will be able to do "campaign wise" is to setup mission specific maps (scenarios) where the AI starts in a certain place with an empire already established (or however you want to set it up).

Like Sparda said, there really isn't code for triggers or scripting.... So (to my knowlege) you are essentially limited to setting up a map, setting up the starting positions, and modifying the galaxy scenario file to the point where the enemy (presuming its AI) will start off with whatever you want it to.

Rebellion has some new victory conditions you could utilize for potential "objectives" but outside of that... sins was never really coded to be a campaign game, rather multiplayer (human vs. human, or human vs. AI).

Good luck with the project!  it will take you longer than a year as others have stated to produce a FULL finished and POLISHED mod.  But dont let that discourage you.  We have been working on 7 Deadly Sins for years now.
