Music Review: Selena Gomez "Come & Get It"
Selena Gomez
Come & Get It
Album: Stars Dance
Year: 2013
Selena Gomez hopes to date her crush in the flashy “Come & Get It.”
Calm “ohs” on a lightly tapped drum open the single, setting a sacred tone. The chorus starts the single. They’ve been talking and flirting for awhile. She thinks a conversation about a relationship will happen one day once he gets the courage to ask her out. (“When you're ready come and get it/Na na na na/When you're ready come and get it/Na na na na/ When you're ready come and get it/ When you're ready/When you're ready/When you're ready come and get it/Na na na na/When you're ready/When you're ready/When you're ready come and get it/Na na na na/When you're ready/When you're ready/When you're ready come and get it/Na na na na.”)
She always make sure to pass by him whenever he’s around. When they are on lunch, she sits close to him and touches his arm. As much as she wants to burst and invite him out with his friends, she’d prefer he brought up dating first. She’s learned he can get overwhelmed easily and doesn’t want to pressure him. It irritates her at times, especially when he smiles back at her. However, she doesn’t want anyone else.
(“You ain't gotta worry, it's an open invitation/I'll be sittin' right here, real patient/All day, all night, I'll be waitin' standby/Can't stop because I love it, hate the way I love you/All day all night, maybe I'm addicted for life, no lie.”)
In the pre-chorus, she’s ok with expressing her feelings to him. He’s a good guy and even if it doesn’t work out, she still met someone worthwhile. There’s a spark between them. It’s not just casual bantering back and forth. (“I'm not too shy to show I love you, I got no regrets./I love you much, too much to hide you, this love ain't finished yet./This love ain't finished yet/So baby whenever you're ready.”)
The chorus is sung twice.
He looks out for her and they can talk about whatever is on their minds. She’s into long-term relationships and would be a devoted girlfriend to him. He may try to push her away. However, she won’t give up on him. (“You got the kind of love that I want, let me get that./And baby once I get it, I'm yours no take backs./I'm gon' love you for life, I ain't leaving your side/Even if you knock it, ain't no way to stop it/Forever you're mine, baby I'm addicted, no lie, no lie.”)
A shortened pre-chorus is sung. (“I'm not too shy to show I love you, I got no regrets./So baby whenever you're ready.”)
The chorus is sung twice.
In the bridge, her friends are trying to hook her up with other guys. However, she told them not fix her up. She’s only interested in her crush. He knows he cares for her. He just needs some encouragement to get the words out. (“This love will be the death of me/But I know I'll die happily/I'll know, I'll know, I'll know/Because you love me so, yeah!”)
The chorus is sung twice to end the single.
Gomez’s simple, transparent vocals are imitative, copying Rihanna note by note. Her usual huskiness is erased by Auto-Tune, deleting any individuality in her voice. Out of the current crop of former Disney stars, she has the most talent. She needs to forget music for awhile and focus on her movie career.
The excessive “Come & Get It” really, really wants to be liked and it's willing to take drastic measures.
