If you are familiar with the acclaimed 4x strategy game Sins of a Solar Empire (SoaSE) you will know of the huge scale of the space battles and the intricacies of spreading your empire.

Sins of the Prophets (SotP) is a great Halo based mod for SoaSE Entrenchment (with a planned released for Rebellion at a later date) that brings something that the Halo games have never full shown or developed, the epic space battles from the Halo books. The space battles are a prime part of the books and the Halo canon but it is only slightly glossed over in the Halo games.

SotP places you in command of the entire UNSC/ Covenant/ Forerunner empire and pits you against all those that stand in the way of your empire's supremacy. The UNSC is the only playable faction at the moment, released in a public beta on moddb.com. The Covenant are being worked on and released at a later date. When the Covenant are done SotP will be transferred over to SoaSE Rebellion and the Forerunners will then be released.

SotP seeks to stay as close to the canon of the Halo books as possible. The UNSC require at least 3 to 1 odds to win against Covenant ships with thousands of opposing ships engaging each other across a universe of planets and stars. Super Mass Acceleration Cannons (SMACs, from Halo 2 and Halo: The Fall of Reach) really do put rounds clean through Covenant capital ships. But with the Covenant not released yet the mod is currently based in 2543, 9 years before the first Halo installation is found and before the Covenant made first contact. The UNSC is still in heated battle with Insurrectionist forces, whom have acquired the means to combat the UNSC in space.

The battling in SotP is quite distinct from that of SoaSE. Most battles are fast paced and dominating the various solar systems requires you to stay on your toes and plan ahead.

If you like Halo, the Halo books and/or the following: strategy games, SoaSE, watching things explode, awesomeness then check out SotP.

Here are some relevant links:

I will now finish this with the current SotP promotional video and some screenshots of the SotP fleet.

All of those models and textures are custom, none of them are edited. I realize there are a lot of photos but name one that isn't awesome. I was also nice and put them in spoiler tags. That is just a small selection of the 100% completed UNSC fleet.

That is all you get for now.

The livestream you were promised for sharing our page with your friends and family (28 shares! Great job!) has been set for tomorrow (12/13/2013) at ~12 (noon) MST. For the lazy, this is 11 AM PST, 1 PM CST, 2 PM EST, and 7 PM GMT (1900 Zulu).

Unikraken will livestream himself playing against a Covenant AI, then switch to Covenant himself and play if time permits at the link below. Be sure to follow him if you have a Twitch.tv account so you get the notification when he starts livestreaming. A big announcement will be made during gameplay as well!!!

From the perspective of someone who's never played a Halo game:

Guys, this mod is gorgeous. The ships look better than the ones in the stock game. I love your visual effects for things like phase-node traveling, missiles, and the plasma gun. It's a feast for the eyes.

I'm used to the Sins style of play (which most mods I've played tend to emulate) in which combat is pretty slow, and ships can trade a ridiculous amount of volleys before one of them finally blows up, so this mods combat balance came as quite a surprise. For lack of a better word, I'd imagine this mod is much more 'realistic' in terms of how quickly ships are blown up.

Two opposing fleets meet in space, and a lot of ships are popping on the opening salvo. 3 seconds into the fight and already there will be heavy casualties on both sides thanks to the opening salvos of the long-cooldown MACs and Plasma cannons. It's brutal, but somehow feels 'right'.

For anyone that hasn't tried this mod: If you wish Sins's combat was faster/more intense (more 'realistic'?), then this is the mod for you, without a doubt.

If you're one of the people that like slow-paced gameplay focused around building caps only and having few losses, then this mod would not be for you.

Expect heavy losses in this mod. You're fighting a war of attrition against far superior opponents when you're playing as the humans. The devs of the mod translate this to the game quite well. You'll need to out-zerg them and use your ship's abilities carefully so as to not waste a shot.

Good luck! :)

So I redownloaded and tried the mod again

Check sum 87925759

Mod loads get the load screen gamer pics and new logos, option to choose race.  hit start and freezes on load screen there is just a little bit of load less than a nail that it starts with and never progresses further.

Rv1.82.4976

FS+SP

Oped in and out of beta same result.

No other mod running concurrent.

The mod works fine without the Sins beta; download the version which got approved today and see if that works.

Yep. The UNSC will get the Infinity and the Super Destroyer will be redone and be the Covenant's Titan.

Hi,

So i was wondering if it weren't better to use a CSO-class Super Carrier as a covenant capital instead of the super destroyer? Since the CSO-classes really are the flagship of the fleets.

And of course it is the home of the Arbiter :D

The developers feel the CSO is too big for Sins of a Solar Empire, and is way too similar to the CAS-class assault carrier.

"The DDS-class carrier, unlike the larger and more powerful assault carrier, is a less frequent but powerful warship within the Covenant Navy. The primary role of the DDS-class carrier is to support fleet actions in space, or as an infantry deployment platform. It is used for command and control of large numbers of waves of fighters, dropships, and interceptors."

"The DDS is our starting Covenant capital and this specific design was created by Leviathan, an artist who created the popular Fistful of Arrows comic book explaining what happens to Jun on Reach."

Credit for the model goes to Didact and the brilliant texturer, Zero, from the Halo mod for Homeworld 2 Homefront.
