Beekeeper’s Daughter

Album: Kids In The Street

Year: 2012

Tyson Ritter likes to use women for sex in the vengeful “Beekeeper’s Daughter.”

A brute guitar opens the single, setting a hedonistic tone. He has slept with numerous women. Every night, it’s a different woma He’s walking along the boulevard, heading towards the bar and nods at a couple women staring at him. He gives them both a 5. They aren’t famous, which shaves off a couple points. The dresses they are wearing look like they came from a cheap discount store. The one women’s roots are showing and it looks she has hammertoes. Her friend looks like  she could use a tan. They are not physically remarkable but they will do. He’s really needs to get laid. He walks to the women, links his arms with him, and leads them to the bar. (“I’ve been goin’ a thousand ways/Choked a hundred hearts in half as many days/Oh no, I think so/And I get so lost inside this city/You ugly girls all look so pretty, it’s true/What am I supposed to do?”)

In the pre-chorus, he slowly slides himself out of one the women’s bed in the morning. However, he wasn’t quiet enough. She wakes up and stretches with a goofy grin on her face. She asks if he wants some breakfast. He tells her no. He’s got to get ready and meet the band to reherease. She rattles off her phone number which he fakes punching into his cell. He promises to call her after the show and leaves. (“I still got you waitin’/Look out your window/What do you see?/You don’t see me.”)

In the chorus, he says the women will never get to know him as a boyfriend. He’s simply looking for sex and nothing more. However, he tells the women what they want to hear to get them in bed. Women will make up excuses for his behavior. They will  by say he’s not ready yet or he’s on the road, it’s not easy to call. But they will still messages for him on his Twitter.  (“You’re a pretty little flower/I’m a busy little bee/Honey, that’s all you need to see/I can take you for an hour/But then I’m gonna leave/Honey I know you’ll wait for me.”)

He “ladada’s” for a couple seconds.

He has a speech prepared that he has told to every woman. First, he explains they are only in their 20s. They have a lot in life to experience. Getting into a long-term relationship will only hinder both of their futures. He admits he can’t commit and it’s wrong to lead them on. However, he only feels bad about it for about ten seconds and heads out again, wondering where to go tonight. He’s not in town to form lasting friendships and exchange stories. He’s there to hook up. (“You’re all alone but you understand/That we’re too young to start making plans agreein’/Monogamy’s not a part of me/And I know my line and is just a sin/But I swear to you I’m gonna do it again/I’m not making any friends.”)

In the pre-chorus, he adds he likes the attention he gets from women.  (“I just wanted you to wait…you don’t see me.”)

       The chorus is sung again.

       He “ladada’s” again.

In the bridge, he’s back at home after being on tour. In his drawer, he found a picture of him and his ex-girlfriend. They dated for three years and he hoped to marry her. However, she broke it off. He was always gone and she felt they weren’t close anymore. After reliving the night they broke up, he puts the picture back in the drawer. (“Pulled out your picture the other day (Oh isn’t that sweet)/You didn’t have that much to say (Cause it wasn't even me)//Cause I know that you said/I’m better off on my own and I’m better off dead.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

He “ladada’s” again.

At the end, he says  “honey, that’s all you had to” to close the single.

Ritter’s spiteful, pitiless vocals are prickish as he chips slowly away at the self-esteem of his current partner. He intends to take advantage of every woman he meets and destroy them like he has been by his ex.  He thrives on the worst stereotypes of women and wants to teach them a lesson. None of who have done nothing to him before. It’s off-putting and troubling, given his enjoyment of hurting women.

The  misognyistic  “Beekeeper’s Daughter” needs to be kneed hard in the groin.
