Kesha

Your Love Is My Drug

Album: Animal

Year: 2010

Kesha is wrapped up in with her new boyfriend in the animated  “Your Love Is My Drug.”

Flushed synths open the single, setting a dazed tone.  She’s only been dating her boyfriend for a month. For the last few weeks, all her time has been spent with him. However, he went on a camping trip with his guy friends from school, leaving her alone for the weekend. She starts to think maybe she needs time to herself for a while and relax. When she’s not out with him, she’s having dreams they are buying a National Coney’s land and a bear invades the restraurant. If she sees the same model of car he has, she thinks it’s him until she notices the license plate. She’s texting him every spare minute. She keeps her phone beside, waiting for his response. Her mind is continually going, causing her not to sleep. She wonders why he didn’t text right away. He wonders if he ate or what he’s talking about with his friends. (“Maybe I need some rehab/Or maybe just need some sleep/I got a sick obsession/I'm seeing it in my dreams/I'm lookin down every alley/I'm making those desperate calls/I'm staying up all night hoping hitting my head against the wall.”)

In the pre-chorus, he’s a great guy. He opens doors for her and has stood up for her when a couple of friends made a snotty remark about her. She cares about him and can’t believe what a fantastic guy she found. (“What you got boy, is hard to find/I think about it all the time/I'm all strung out my heart is fried/I just cant get you off my mind!”)

In the chorus, she’s become dependent on him, needing him in her life. Without him, she would self-destruct. (“Because your love your love your love is my drug/Your love your love your love/(I said)Your love your love your love is my drug/Your love your love your love.”)

Her friends are telling her to not move so fast. It’s only the beginning of the relationship. Her mom isn’t sure about him yet. She told her that both the family and her need to get know each other a bit more. She realizes she isn’t thinking clearly, either. It’s part of her impulsive personality. Her best friends have never seen her be devoted to any guy like her boyfriend. She’s mostly the love ‘em and leave ‘em type. Eventually, her reputation as wild party girl is going to be shot and she’s going to mellow out, becoming a (somewhat) responsible person. (“Won't listen to any advice/Momma's telling me I should think twice/
But look into my own devices, I'm addicted it's a crisis/My friends think I've gone crazy/My judgments gettin' kinda hazy/My steeze is gonna be affected if I keep it up like a love sick crack head.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, she’s ignoring the smirks and comments. Seeing him smile at her is enough to block out everything around her. He makes her incredibly happy. She misses him when he leaves, wishing she could go with him. She’s ready to sleep with him and practices a cute way to ask him without making it awkward. She wonders if he has the same intensity of feelings as she does. (“ I don't care what people say/The rush is worth the price I pay/I get so high when you're with me/But crash and crave you when you leave/Hey, so I got a question/Do you wanna have a slumber party in my basement?/Do I make your heart beat like an 808 drum/Is my love your drug?/Your drug?/Huh, your drug?/Huh, your drug?/Is my love your drug?”)

             The chorus is sung twice.

At the end, she compliments on her favorite physical feature he has: his beard. (“Hey, hey, so/
You love, your love your love, is my drug/I like your beard.”)

Kesha’s woozy, excited vocals are hyper, bouncing from one end to the song to the other with unrelentless energy. She does her own thing and says what she wants, which most people criticize. She’s either a drunk flake or a drunk brat. He accepts her for who she is, seeing past her reputation.

The exhilarative “Your Love Is My Drug” hustles, leaving everyone huffing as they try to catch up.
