Music Review: Trey Songz "Simply Amazing"

Trey Songz

Simply Amazing

Album: Chapter V

Year: 2012

Trey Songz is in awe of his girlfriend in the lauding  “Simply Amazing.”

A soft guitar opens the single, setting a starry-eyed tone. In the spoken intro, Songz says his girlfriend has a way of reaching him no one ever has. (“I can't really explain what it is she does/But um, whatever it is/It's um, simply, simply amazing.”)

The sun is streaming through the window of their bedroom, waking him up before the alarm. Careful not to rouse her, he caresses her shoulder while she sleeps on his chest. He gives her a soft kiss on her forehead and continues to watch her. He checks the alarm, which will be going off any minute, ending the moment. He wishes he could freeze time and stay with her forever. (“Her head is on my chest, sun comes rolling in/We're lost in these covers, and all I feel is skin/I slowly kiss your face, beautiful in every way, you are (you are.”)

In the pre-chorus,  when he watches the news or hears about yet another scandal within the city, he blows it off. He expects people to be corrupt and take advantage of others. However, his relationship gives him hope. Sometimes he’ll forget to pick up his towels after his shower, which annoys her and it starts an argument between them. However, it doesn’t last long and they back in bed again, kissing each other. (“See I'm a man that don't believe in much/But I'll be damned, if I don't believe in us/And how we play a fight up in the bathroom/Next thing you know I'm making love to you/Girl, promise me you'll never change.”)

In the chorus, he realizes there are times she gets on his nerves. However, he accepts her neat freak tendencies. It’s only a part of who she is. He wouldn’t ever break up with her over it. She’s a big hearted person who would help anyone out. She gave him a chance and sometimes he can’t help but feel he’s not good enough for her. She cares about him and it’s more than he could ever ask for. (“She ain't perfect, but she's worth it/Every breath I breathe, for the life of me/And I know I might not deserve it/But she loves me, and it's simply amazing (you are),/Simply amazing (you are), simply amazing (you are)/And she loves me, and it's simply amazing, amaze-amazing.”)

She is a beautiful woman with extraordinary features, setting her apart from other women. She has a warm smile and long, silky hair that flows, landing on the right spots. She took the time to get to know him and can even guess what he’s thinking. (“The girl's a work of art, and I can't help but stare/With a smile like the sunset, and the ocean is her hair/Oh what she do ain't fair oh/She know me better, than I know myself.”)

In the pre-chorus, he remembers the first time he told her “I love you.” He had felt it for a while but wasn’t sure how to say it. She was setting the table for their dinner. It was her job to bring dessert. He’s allergic to chocolate, which most people forget. She brought a dutch apple pie, his favorite. He didn’t even have to tell her. She noticed on her own. After they finished eating, he held her in his arms and told her he loved her.  (“See I'm a man, that don't believe in much… Like when I said I loved you for the first time/And the tears dropped from your eyes/Girl, don't you ever change.”)

             The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, he ever had plans to move to another state, she would have to come with him. He wouldn’t be able to handle a long-distance relationship. She’s special and he wouldn’t be able to find anyone like her ever again. (“There is nothing, in this world/That can keep me away from you/And there's nobody who could ever compare to you/Oh.”)

The chorus is sung again to end the single.

Songz’s infatuated, blissful  vocals beam with pride for having found such a wonderful woman to share his life. He wants to shout it from every rooftop. He has become better person because of her.

The sublime “Simply Amazing” has a gracious heart.
