As for fingernail eating thing... eeew.

Yeah, there's a special pharmaceutical to prevent that, just paint it on your fingernails [toenails too, if'n yer can get 'em in yer gob] and you won't be tempted to dine on 'em a second time.

Pupils at my high school weren't game to bite/chew their nails.... Granny Russell [she looked uncannily like Granny from the Beverley Hillbillies] and Mr Brimecombe would rap anyone they caught severely across the knuckles with a ruler.
