SOASE March 1v1 Tournament

SOASE March 1v1 Tournament

So one thing that seems to be missing is some organized tournaments.  As such, I'm going to start hosting some tournaments through Challonge.Com and see how that goes.  It's bound to be a bit rusty at first, but should improve over time.  I wasn't sure if we should do regional tournaments or global, but I thought we'd start of global and see how many people sign-up.  If a lot do then we can do regional.

Signup Page: http://soase.challonge.com/march

The idea is that you communicate with your opponent to arrange a game day / time.  This may be challenging with the timezone difference in a global tournament, but hopefully it can work.  After the match the winner is disclosed and marked on the bracket.

All skill levels welcomed to start with.  Again, if enough people, we can split into skill leagues or something.

Tournament Rules

Tempest Competitive Map - I evaluated all of the competitive maps and this is by far the fairest one.  It's under Medium Maps.

All Sub-Factions Allowed - No Wail, No Maw, No Jumping Starbases

No Pirates, Faster Game Speed, Quick Start On

Comments and feedback welcome.  Has anyone tried this before?  Any suggestions on how it should be run?  Other than that, please sign-up using the link above and hopefully we get enough people to give it a try.  Over time this will work better with seeding, but I don't know enough of the players to do seeding yet.

1v1s place players a lot farther away than they would likely be in a 4s or 5s game...it is much easier to rush wail in a 1v1 than it is for a frontliner in a 4s or 5s games...having done this in a 1v1 without map advantage and against a more skilled player, I can say that wail even in its current state is still grossly OP...

You are aware that if that strategy was to be used, the other player would've scouted or atleast caught on. Using the others lack of expansion to expand rapidly. And if he's only got 2 worlds, with only one of which would produce a decent wail.. (hw) hes not really in a great position. Same story if he does send he prog forward, he needs to let the planet he plans to wail off of to get the required amount of populace to do sizable damage to the fleet.

Even a moon can kill all corvettes in a shot, or severely damage all frigates that are not carriers or heavy cruisers, not to speak about volcanics, ice etc. Moon= 1000 damage from 50 population, vlcano 70 population will be 1400 damage and so on.

So for map we need a competitive one and one that doesn't lead to really long games... something like "Tiny - Competitive"?  Or would you rather do "Small - Competitive"?  Or something else?  Again, whatever the majority want, but I think it needs to be a competitive mode one to ensure people get fair starting positions.

I think premade maps have identical planets, maybe the amount of resources are not the same, so I think a custom made mirrored map would be the fairest for those who want to play in this competition with identical number and ratio of crystal and metal asteroids, to be the fairest and not to give anyone a real starting advantage, even competitive maps are random in the middle of the map, and can be a huge difference if two same level skilled person plays against each other. This way the small differences could mean the diference between victory or defeat, who is faster, who can use resources better, and not who got an ice planet instead of the enemy's dwarf planet, or something like this.

I only played some 1v1's online (competitive maps of course), but many times weird maps happened to form, and even normal maps would be fairer than those failed competitive maps so that's why I'm saying the things above.

I think we should stay away from people having to download special maps for the tournament.  I'd rather get the best alternative and just run with that.  This is just a tournament for fun, not $1000 or anything.  |-)

Tiny competitive random map is best by far then...small has too many planets and location of pirate base screws up maps a lot...

Now up to 10 people!  We can do better than that though.  Come on people, it's just a bit of fun.  Yes, I'm talking to you that's reading this right now and hasn't signed up yet!

Posting just so I remember to sign up if it looks like I might actually have time in March to do this.

Wow this looks great! I'm in

Also, I think you'll have more luck filling the tournament if you post this in the 'Sins Multiplayer' section, rather than in 'multiplayer organiser'. The ICO regulars only post and probably only read on 'Sins Multiplayer'

Thanks PlayerSlayer for joining and the advice.  I've done a repost in that forum now.  Next time I'll post the tournament in there instead.

1v1 Tourney done for the day. Me vrs Chili close game had fun. I made lots of mistakes and I was undecided on what tactics to use. I almost had called it early on the game thinking that Chili was going to roll me over but i played it all out against what seemed to be at odds against me. Some how i managed to pull out of it and stuck it out. GG Chili.

For those finding out about this now and wishing they could take part or those in the tourney and having fun.  I've setup the next tournament here.  It will start after the current tournament ends.
