Cryin’
Album: Get A Grip
Year: 1993
Steven Tyler wants his girlfriend to talk about her emotions in the “Cryin’”
Reeling guitars open the single, setting a frustrated tone. As though caught, the guitars turn quiet. Tyler had been rejected enough to not give relationships a chance. He would limit it to one-night stands and not talk to them again. The last couple one night stands had left him cold, as though he were incapable of emotion. Now, he wants more than just sex. He wants to experience love at first sight, the trips to the grocery store to pick up dinner, and create a family. All it takes is a kiss for him to realize if the woman is the right one for him. (“There was a time/When I was so broken hearted/Love wasn't much of a friend of mine/The tables have turned, yeah/'Cause me and them ways have parted/That kind of love was the killin' kind/Now listen/All I want is someone I can't resist/I know all I need to know by the way that I got kissed.”)
In the chorus, he has finally meet someone. However, he’s fallen for a woman who is closed off from her emotions.. So far, it’s only a physical relationship. (“I was cryin' when I met you/Now I'm tryin' to forget you/Love is sweet misery/I was tryin' just to get you/Now I'm dyin' cause I let you/Do what you do - down on me.”)
In the pre-chorus, he’s trying to learn her moods. She has a sullen demeanor and bursts into tears when they are being intimate. He doesn’t know what to do for her and it’s hurting him. (“Now there's not even breathin' room/Between pleasure and pain/Yeah you cry when we're makin' love/Must be one and the same.”)
He explains to her that he loves her. He considers her to be his best friend. She as a quality to her all her own which sets her apart from anyone else he’s ever been with. (“It's down on me/Yeah I got to tell you one thing/It's been on my mind/Girl I gotta say/We're partners in crime/You got that certain something/What you give to me/Takes my breath away.”)
In the pre-chorus, he says to her that he’s heard she’s the love and leave ‘em type. Despite her reputation, he doesn’t want to break up with her. (“Now the word out on the street/Is the devil's in your kiss/If our love goes up in flames/It's a fire I can't resist.”)
The chorus is sung again.
The reeling guitar returns for the bridge .He tells her not be afraid to express herself. Without the emotional connection, their relationship has no value. (“'Cause what you got inside/Ain't where your love should stay/Yeah, our love, sweet love, ain't love/Till you give your heart away.”)
The chorus is sung three times to end the single.
Tyler’s expasterated, confused vocals are slippery, slithering towards her with encouraging words and then turning away, spewing anger with the situation to everyone else. Despite his claims to stay with her even though it’s rough, he seems to ready to bolt at any minute.
The hollow “Cryin’” cracks by the chorus, sinking further into a dull hole.
