Need a bit of help with something please?

Okay! So here is my problem I am having. I recently received a Kensington Mouse-in-a-box as a gift.
I have tested it on several computers and it works fine, but on mine it refuses to respond.

When I plug it in, my computer makes the 'device plugged in' sound. Or 'device recognized' sound or whatever. And in the 'device manager' it shows up. But when I move the mouse itself, the pointer on screen doesn't respond. Any tips on how to fix this problem?

And for reference, the full name of the mouse is ' Kensington Mouse in a box. The P/N: K72356 ' Its a wired optical mouse, black.

Odd... their ad says "it's plug and play so it will work with your computer guaranteed." I'd give Kensington support a shot, or uninstall and plug in again. Have you tried unplugging and then re-plugging in?

If none of the above work... maybe exchange it where it was purchased?

Are you using Windows 8?  If so, perhaps you need updated driver?

I have tried unplugging and replugging in, in all 6 usb slots on my computer. I have tried restarting; I have even gone so far as to uninstall the driver itself in device manager and reinstall via plug and play. I also tried cleaning my registry, and uninstalling my original mouse and only leaving the Kensington plugged in. And no, I have not tried their tech support because it was a gift and I can't exchange it.

Not windows 8, No. I am running on up to date Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have fiddled with this mouse for about 2 days, so this problem really is driving me up the wall; onto the roof, and almost over the edge. Any help will be appreciated. x_x

Did you have a look at their knowledgebase search here:

http://www.kensington.com/kensington/us/us/s/1708/faqs.aspx

I typed in "mouse" and got a few pages of results, didn't look at them too closely, but I did see one that said "don't install MouseWorks on Win7" if that's what you did.  Anyway you might have a look at it.  Good hunting. :)

(You type your search phrase in the box under the FAQ header, after selecting "mouse" from the pull-down.  If you use the search field at the top of the page you'll just get listings of their mouse product. ;P )

-.-" WebGizmos. It was a Christmas gift. I can't sell it, that would be rude.

And Thanks Dave. I'll have a look at it and see what I can find. And I don't know what 'MouseWorks' Is. If its a program, its not installed on my computer. I have the bare minimum of programs and games I play and others I use for maintaining my computer etc.

I had a quick look at that page Dave, It didn't bring anything up concerning the mouse I own. Just their other mouses, wireless and etc. Things like that. This mouse is this:

I looked at the reviews for it on NewEgg and it seems like a decent little mouse for what it is.

I'm taking it for granted that you're using it on a mousepad or such and not on anything shiny like glass, right?  It could be your old mouse would track on something that this one won't.

I have had mice freeze up because they had a single little strand of hair or such down in the laser well on the bottom of the mouse.  But if you're going back and forth between machines and it consistently works on the others but not on yours that's probably not the case.  You might check that, while the mouse is off to keep the laser out of your eyes.

If you really want to go for it you might uninstall any keyboard software like MS Intellitype or Logitech keyboard if you've got it installed, could be some sort of conflict there I suppose, but that's reaching.  I'm just guessing.

And when I read reply #3 I got the impression you are plugging it into the usb ports that are actually on your computer.  If that not the case and you're plugging into a usb hub, try plugging it directly into the usb port on the computer itself.

After all this, my guess is that it's a defective mouse.

I'd tell the person who gifted you, and say "I think it's just what I need, so I'd like to exchange it for another. Did you save the receipt, or where did you get it so I can do the exchange."

That isn't rude at all... after all, the person did want you to have a good, functioning mouse.

He said it work fine on several other computers though Doc, so I don't think that's the problem. What he really needs to do is call their Tech Support, even if it was a gift as long as he has the information on the mouse they should talk to him. One other thing could be the BIOS version on the computer which it won't work on, whether or not they are USB 1, 2 or 3 ports, etc.,, which I am sure Kensington Tech Support will probably address. :)

If the mouse is not broken, perhaps you have another device that is interfering?  Have you cleaned out all broken devices (including any hidden ones) in device manager?  Have you tried using the mouse in safemode?

Another possibility might be that there is some setting you need to change, but i cannot imagine how this could be.

Yes, I am using the mouse on the mousepad when its pulled into directly into my PC usb ports. No, It doesn't have a hair or any such within the eye, and no; I don't have things like logitech keyboard or things like that. DrJBHL, I can't really get the receipt from the person because they live in Scotland, and I am in the states. -.-"

And no, The computer works fine on a vista computer, and on another windows 7 home premium. And no, I haven't tried it on safe mode, but I have tried to clean up ghost hardware in the device manager with no luck, I generally keep all those things up to date and don't install hardware I won't use again. But I'll do another full scan, maybe read a few tech forms and etc.

I am thinking it must be something, because the mouse is recognized, it appears to be working; but just the pointer on screen won't move. Works fine on the other two computers as well, so I figure I will plug it back into those, check the device manager and settings for it; when its plugged into those and see if there is any difference between mine and the other computers.

This is odd, but I just noticed with the mouse plugged in; the computer repeatedly makes the 'new device connected' sound. Hm... -Kicks self in face- Well, I feel like an idiot at this moment. -.-"

I thank everyone that helped with this. I found the problem, it was a thing called 'Motionjoy' I used to use on my computer; it happened to be over-ridding the mouse with a 'virtual mouse' setting. Once uninstalled the mouse now works perfectly fine.

Once again, I'd like to thank you all for helping me with this. ^.^

Glad you got it working.  Always annoying when a should-be-simple new toy is stubborn for some obscure reason. ;)
