Music Review: Jessie J "Domino"
Jessie J
Domino
Album: Who You Are
Year: 2011
Jessie J has fallen in love in the euphoric “Domino.”
A brash guitar opens the single, setting a passionate tone. She has met a wonderful guy. When they exchange glances, she feels like she’s a supermodel and flirts back with ease. She has found peace, With him, there isn’t any angst. He’s the best thing that’s ever happened to her and she’s ready to burst. She wants to tell everyone about him. (“I'm feeling sexy and free/Like glitter's raining on me/You're like a shot of pure gold/I think I'm 'bout to explode.”)
In the pre-chorus, it’s as though her body is on fire whenever she is near him. Her nerves pulsate, nearly piercing her skin. It leaves her breathless and she can’t concentrate on anything. She could stare into his eyes and stay in his arms throughout the night. They have a strong relationship. She wants him to test limits. (“I can taste the tension like a cloud of smoke in the air/Now I'm breathing like I'm running cause you're taking me there/Don't you know? You spin me out of control/Oh, oh, oh, oh/We can do this all night/
Damn this love is skin tight/Baby, come on/Oh, oh, oh, oh/Boom me like a bass drum/Sparkin' up a rhythm/Baby, come on!/Oh, oh, oh, oh.”)
In the chorus, she can talk to him about any topic and it's fun. She wants him tochallenge her. She’s only imagined love and for the first time, it’s real. Every private moment is something to cherish. As they dance close, she leans in to him and gives in to her emotions. (“Rock my world into the sunlight/Make this dream the best I've ever known/Dirty dancing in the moonlight/Take me down like I'm a domino/Every second is a highlight/When we touch don't ever let me go/Dirty dancing in the moonlight/Take me down like I'm a domino.”)
She can’t think of anything but him. Her life has become richer with him in it. She’s enjoying life. He’s everything she’s ever wanted. (“You got me losing my mind/My heart beats out of time/I'm seeing Hollywood stars/You strum me like a guitar.”)
The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.
In the bridge, she’s the happiest she’s ever been. (“Oh, baby, baby, got me feeling so right/Oh, baby, baby, dancing in the moonlight/Oh, baby, baby, got me feeling so right/Oh, baby, baby, dancing in the moonlight/Oh, baby, baby, got me feeling so right/Oh, baby, baby, dancing in the moonlight/Oh, baby, baby, got me feeling so right/Oh, baby, baby.”)
The chorus is sung again.
Jessie J’s breathless, pure vocals are blissful. There’s a hint toughness which adds some emotional depth. Falling in love has changed her. Before, she would keep the guys she was dating at arm’s length but she can open up to her current boyfriend easily.
The rapturous “Domino” overflows with energy as it captures the rush of first love.
