Anybody ever partition out a bad section of a drive?

Had a hard drive that failed.  Wouldn't complete a checkdisk or format.  I noticed that during a couple of format attempts it was hanging early on, so I created a 10 gig partition and then another partition with the remainder.  The 10 gig partition won't format (as expected) but the second partition formats fine, seems ok.

I haven't had a drive behave quite this way before, I'm wondering if the larger second partition might remain usable or if I'm being overly optimistic.  Anybody run into this before?

(I don't have it plugged in at the moment, so any quick test suggestions might take a bit.)

Run a checkdisk on the "working" partition. Odds are it has bad clusters as well or will have in the very near future..  I would pronounce it toasted.

Dave... run  chkdsk /f /r

After typing it in, it'll happen on your next boot. Takes time, but it will fix what it can, and tell you where the bad sectors are. You might not be able to 'work around' it/them. You might need (and should have) a new disk or SSD.

Did it decades ago [almost].....these days drives are cheap.

Don't bother partitioning, or anything else.  Replace it.
