I hate dust

If you would have told me one year ago that adding a pet to the house (that doesn't shed and doesn't even stay in the same room as the computer) could add so much dust that I am now having to dust the innards of my PC once every two months... I'd call you crazy.  But, it wasn't until I noticed Fallen Enchantress screwing up on me (graphics stuttering badly), I pulled open the case after I deduced it was not  asoftware error, that I noticed a cake of dust on my GPU fan.  Man alive!  So, last time I dusted I kept thinking, 'Wow, won't have to do this for a another several months."  Nope... I was wrong.  So, now I am thinking I'll have to take other measures.   Change the vent screens around the house more often, clean more often, maybe buy a dust/allergen remover.  I have heard people suggest putting pantyhose around the vent holes on the PC, but that ain't gonna help much, at least it won't help this machine.

Sorry for the rant... anyone want a small dog?  I've taught it to sit and shake hands.  Now all I need to do is teach it how to dust itself.

Brush it more often? I currently do not have any pets in my apartment but I still have to clean the vents on my Antec 902v3 case every 2 months ... a huge pain as you have to basically break down the case to do it.

I use el-cheapo furnace filter pieces over the intake vents, helps a lot.  I know somebody else around here uses toilet paper.  I could see where pantyhose might work too.  Main thing is you'd want to get some decent filtration without fibers or piece getting into the machine while keeping good airflow, and I do have to keep an eye on mine and change them when they get dirty - the dirtier they get the more they choke the airflow.

That'll be me...;)

All my computing career we had a Persian ...so cat hair came with the territory .... hence adopting the use of toilet paper.... she since passed....but now we have two cats.....

Lian Li case has two induct fans at the front behind an easy clip-off front cover ....easy as to regularly replace paper held inplace by the suction.

If you get 'serious' you'll need to look at the front usb ports, card readers, even DVD drive doors ....all will be at the inlet 'end' of a case's ventilation....;)

Another Top Gear Top Tip: Don't ever place the box/case on the floor.
No matter what floor type you've got, the PC will suck up all the dust faster than you can vacuum it!

I have a friend who is bringing her computer to me for a tuneup next week and I can almost guarantee that in the eight years she has owned it that it has never been cleaned. She has three big dogs and three cats and I know it will be full of crap. Matter of a fact, I will bet that is 90% of what is wrong with it! I know how mine gets in only a few months with my pussy cats! I am afraid to use anything on it for filters as it is inside of the desk door and the circulation is not the best.

Wholy  :moo: I hope that door is open when in use.. heat is a huge killer of PC's x_x

A good idea is remove the back of the desk covering that area where the tower sits, keeping door open when in use or just removing the door completely.  One could even cut a hole in the side or back of desk and install a large case fan powered by the Power supply on the PC. thus creating a constant draw of fresh cooler air in to the compartment and expelling the hot air .

to the OP.. Bathe the Dog weekly in a approved doggy soap, he will be itch free and the PC should stay cleaner longer. Not to mention it gives him plenty of quality time with his best friend. :dog:

In theory...dust is heavier than air....so ultimately...the higher up you place a PC box the cleaner it will keep...;)

I have an old Antec 900 case, what I did was buy those charcoal filters that are made for air purifiers and but them right in front of my intake fans.

The newer 902v3 cases have removable filters ... in that you have to practically take the entire case apart to get to them.

There is a large vent in the side of the desk and I do keep a small exterior fan behind the PC (inside the door) but do keep the door open when the PC is on. I would love to have a different set up but for now there just isn't any other place to put the darn thing. It is a huge Grandfathers roll top desk and it was made to put the PC tower inside but I still feel like the circulation is lacking. My husband bought the desk for me about 12 years ago and there is no gentle way to tell him that I would like to replace it. :meow:

is that vent in the chamber where the tower is? if so u might be able to install a case type fan inside blowing out, thus not ruining the Asthetics of the desk from the exterior while improving air flow..

possibly something like this maybe ?

I have a Lian Li B25 which has filters on the front intakes. But since it means either pulling the entire drive cage or dealing with (i.e., risking destroying) aluminum screws to get them out, I just shut the machine off and stick the vacuum hose to the front of the case. Works just fine and I haven't had any major issues with dust buildup inside the case in the years I've had it.

I literally just put them on the outside of the case and the suction of the fans hold them there....

At 30,000 feet, you don't even need fans to keep things cool but below that you will need filters, you wouldn't want to suck a goose into your intake. o_O

If that is an option, definitely do that. An air ioniser and good filters are the best overall solutions. Remember, you and your family are inhaling the same air that your computer is inhaling. When was the last time those filters were cleaned? ;)

It will also mean less dusting, a great side benefit.

Also an excellent idea. I'm usually amazed about the stuff folks buy for their computers while neglecting themselves.

Might one assume this means you don't turn it off?

I heard that Zubaz used Doc's Tech Service once. Appears Doc "cleaned" the keyboard so well, the letters came off, which is why Zubaz has so many typos.....

You just never know how these things happen.
