Are SSD’s worth it? Answer: YES

Are SSD’s worth it? Answer: YES

Anyone who has an SSD already know this. But there are still people out there who aren’t sure on this.  The performance difference of putting in an SSD is greater than any single upgrade I’ve ever seen since the days back in the early 90s of going from 4M to 8M in memory on Windows NT or OS/2.

I'm one of those with SATA II and got a SATA III drive in case I needed to transfer to a new MB. Love the improvement - I know I'm not getting the full benefit but the benefit I did receive was amazing.

Same here...SATA3 SSD on a 2 board...and as Pas says....you'll have no complaints re performance increase...;)

about that ocz vertex 4 Anthony bought, i hope it never fails because ocz's tech support is atrocious

I'll see what happens, with the price drop and the lightning fast speed of the drive it was irresistible to pass up. As far as tech support I usually disregard those types of criticisms cause I cant really think of many tech support situations where I was like oh yeah man, I really need to call them back cause they were so helpful and the experience was so pleasant. Its always a hoop jump. :)

anthony, i hope you'll never need to use ocz's tech support. i sincerely do. as for the second part of your last post, the only two companies i've been completely satisfied with regarding tech support have been corsair and asus. gigabyte is pretty good, too. the worst i've ever dealt with was lian-li. getting a reply from them took almost a month. luckily, it wasn't my lian-li case that was dented (the guy said it was delivered that way but i didn't believe him). anyway, enjoy your ssd. i'm sure you'll be happy with it for years.

paul, you're using a vertex 2 drive, aren't you?

I had a SATA2 on a SATA2 board, upgraded both to SATA3.

I have the Agility 4 256GB on my main rig. SATA3...........very pleased.

I moved the Vertex Plus 120GB SATA2 to my laptop....also very pleased.

I hope it holds up, sad to hear that OCZ's support is atrocious.    :annoyed:

SATA2 on SATA2 mobo

SATA3 on SATA3 mobo

RND....try the sata3 SSD on a 2 board .....so it's the same SSD on both boards....then the difference will be less...;)

Yeah, I know. Wizard pointed that out too. I seem to have failed to keep a record of the SATA3 SSD on the SATA2 mobo.

I can remember that the SATA3 SSD on the SATA2 mobo got almost the same speeds as the SATA2 SSD.

And the WEI didn't change much.  The SATA2 mobo took a dump on me, so I had to get the new mobo.

Unless you're kona...hehe... :P

I tell all my friends, if you want faster with what you got, just change to an SSD. Whether it be a laptop or desktop.

As many have said though, only if you are running a SATA 3 motherboard.

SS #1 of reply #55 is proof of that fact. SATA2.

Plus a boot time of 35-40 seconds is a plus.

The answer to the OP remains a resounding YES, with one caveat. Buy a SATAIII SSD. At some point you will be upgrading/replacing your rig and chances are, it will be SATAIII. It makes no sense at all to buy a SATAII unit, regardless of its lower cost.

But if someone gives you a SATAII SSD, it'll do fine... ;)

Just wanted to say if you want to buy SSD´s cheap you may get lucky as i was on cyber monday week sales on amazon... 128gb ( samsung 830 series ) for 60 euros thats pretty damn cheap... ohh and i recently got a ADATA Premier Pro SP900 (256) and it crosses the 500 read/write mark for me  ( 522/512 ) attached it to my rig, booted up and it worked like a charm, i can only recommend it. Now all you hear from my pc is the Noctua cooler draging air through the tower

Why yes, it will. Nothing wrong with hand-me-downs. ;)   Now if only someone had 4GB's of DDR2 800 MHz RAM just laying around.......... :-"

I have a 4 gb stick of ddr3 you can have.

I have 2 Crucial M4 256mb SSD. When I got them they were $239.99 per unit. My boot time is 20 to 21 seconds to useable desktop. with windows 8. and 25 to 30 on windows 7. Everything seems snapper. Games load faster. No more defragmenting your drive. I think they are well worth the price.

SSD the only way to go. I picked up Samsung 840 250GB (the non pro version) cheap, plus they was giving Far Cry 3 out for free. I will never go back to HDD for the bootdrive.

I just popped a couple of Intel SATA II 160GB SSD's into my PC and am now dual booting Windows 7 and Windows 8.  WEI went from 5.9 overall to 7.1 and things are definitely faster! SSD's are definitely worth it!

tom, i knew you'd like it once you took the plunge. tell b.a. about your experience. the last time i talked to him, he wasn't sold on ssd's.

Ah, but Which OS do you have on the SSD's, Tom?  Huh, huh?

Hehe, I'm willing to bet it'll be Win7 over Win 8. ;P

I have Win 8 on 2 160gb SATA III's in RAID0 and it totally flies... boots in 21 seconds to a workable desktop on my rig. :)

I have Windows 7 on one SSD and Windows 8 on the other SSD starkers. Right now I boot directly to Windows 7 though as that is where I do all my designing. When key Stardock products support Windows 8 I may somewhat reconsider that, but probably not too strongly. Of course I am using Start8 on Windows 8, I don't use the Metro/Modern UI at all, straight to the desktop! :)

I have 8 on a touch screen PC. I play with it some, even the modern UI.

I promise you that 7 will be my main use OS for a good while yet.  ;)

I figured that, but being you're not a fan of Win 8 I was just having a little dig.  In your situation I'd be doing the same thing, but I don't make WB's and find that Win 8 better suits my needs with video editing, etc.  Sadly, though, Win 8 is not as pretty as Win 7, so hopefully WindowBlinds for Win 8 is ready soon.

Hmmm, touch, play!  That has such dirty connotations... and knowing you, there's a picture of a sheep on screen when you're touching it.

Now all you need is to get a hang of the voice controls [kneel, Bessie, kneel] and you'll be in 7th heaven. :-" ;P :w00t:

J/K.
