[Idea]More Interesting Magic Victory

Magic victory right now is just a generic civilization or wonder win. It really is what you do if your winning but can't be bothered to try and conquer the other players. All you do is get a certain amount of tech and then wait to build a bunch of buildings, and then cast a spell which is just even more waiting. That's really really boring. Magic victory should be spiced up and made much more competitive and riveting.

To do this I would suggest adding a global non-additive resource called Shard Mastery. Instead of requiring one of each type of shard the Spell of Mastery would require the casting player to have the most Shard Mastery output of all the players. Shard Mastery would be granted by shards and various magical buildings, like the Forge of the Overlord towers. Upgraded shards would also grant more Shard Mastery. The Forge towers would be made world achievements and scattered among the magic tech tree. Thus players going for a magic victory would have to plan it from the start and compete amongst each other to amass the most shards, magic tech, and unique buildings. This would be much more organic and interesting then the current system. Like military conquest it would be organic, challenging, exciting, and require planning.

The current Spell of Mastery system is very dull and seems to exist only so players have a I'm done button when they reach a certain tech and don't want to play anymore. Making the Spell of Mastery more competitive and strategic would really help liven up the end game.

I agree that the spell of mastery needs to be made more interesting / challenging.

However I have a couple of alternative suggestions.

1) Do it galactic civ style, and have it exist at the end of a long chain of techs.  I would argue that these techs should include mastery of each individual element, and some appropriate way of using that in game.

2) In order to cast it someone under your control must be an archmage of all of the elemental magics, and they all need to contribute to the spell.(1 person could be archmage of air, another of fire and water, and a third of earth...that sort of thing).

3) The casting of the spell could include having to go to a shrine of each of the elements and cast a ritual there first before you cast the global spell.  If any of the ritual sites is destroyed you would need to restart.

4) The buildings needed to trigger it can only be built in level 4 cities of the appropriate type: tower of the witch in conclave, tower of the sword in fortress, etc.

I feel like a combination of some of these (not necessarily all) would add to the challenge factor enough to make it more interesting.

My biggest problem with the Magic Victory is how quickly it can be achieved.  It's not even end-game tech.  The game could've just started to get interesting and then BAM!  Spell of Making.  Game's over.  It's supposed to be the equivalent of a tech victory, like the spaceship in Civ, but the space victory in Civ was a lot more involved.  You had to get multiple techs, spend a bunch of time building a ship, and then the ship had to land before someone else won some other way.

I think that if FE went multiplayer, it would ultimately be just a Spell of Making race.
