Let's Play Beta 4 (Video Series)

Loving Beta 4. My only complaints with the game are now mainly regarding the UI.

The Let's Play - playlist is here.

Nice series das, its a shame my patience died some time ago, but really enjoying seeing the first 45 minutes of the show. I hope you get to show off some awesome stuff, get some vids of bugs :P, and have a good time doing them :D

Sincerely

You fell for the tribute scam with Magnar in episode 9. They give you money up front in exchange for you giving them a portion or your income per turn. You should cancel that deal if you haven't already.

Are you sure? Altar demanded that I pay them tribute while Magnar offered to pay me tribute. My assumption is that they are paying me. The description is the same for both (which is quite confusing) but I thought it was a way for the weaker empires to ensure their safety.

You are getting much better at the game. Always a pleasure to watch.

Well you can double check by either hovering over your income if the list isn't too long or by looking at the diplomacy screen I think. Maybe they fixed it in this version but that happened to me in the first ever game I played. He gave me a huge amount like 700 gildar but then I realized I was giving him 20% of my income or something like that.

As awesome as always, Das!

Hi Das123, I finally wanted to thank you for your Let's Plays. They are the reason why I joined up during Beta 3 and see the changes made since WoM for myself. I still can't believe, that I'm getting this game for free.

Also, I agree with UmbralAngel. Magnar scammed you.

Thank you for your Let's plays, think they are among the very best of this game out there. I'm also glad you don't play on normal difficulty, I usually avoid LP's that are. The more difficult the merrier.

I just disagree that leatherworking and shields should be free techs from the start, as you mention in one of the episodes. You can already build early units as it is, and if you try that strategy it can be very powerfull, and you can start leveling up your units alot faster then in this LP. I don't see a point making better weapons and armor available earlier, then it would have to be nerfed for they would have been extremely powerfull early on, and it would also take away from the tech tree choices, if you ask me. ;)

Edit: Have seen the 6 first episodes, really look forward to the 3 new ones.

Norse: I just think das would want to start with some basic kind of useless armor, and some proper starting weapons (The club is so useless IMO)

Yes, there should be some sort of low-level armour (and one weapon from each type) so you can build a really basic unit at the start that can level up as better equipment becomes available. You can build a unit that auto-levels with the selections in the designer, but I think the best option now is to design a really basic leather unit (so you can build it easily) and then upgrade as required or as materials become available.

For example, if you pick a basic militia unit at the start then it is never going to be able to have armour - ever. The unit becomes useless very quickly. But design a unit with basic leather armour and then by mid game when you have chainmail etc its just a click of a button to upgrade it.

And there should be a way to upgrade the size of a unit (from Party to Group to Company etc). Even if it costs experience that would still be good.

By the way, in my own playing around I've figured out why the AI only moves one square in tactical combat some times (apologies if you figured this out in the later videos, I haven't watched the last two yet).

The AI clearly wants to get in the first attack.  If it can move further than your units, it will inch up towards you one space at a time until on the next move it can reach you, but you can't reach it.  That way, it gets in the first hit.  I experimented around by moving forwards and backwards, and it seems pretty clear that's what the AI is thinking.

Now, unfortunately for the AI, it seems to ignore the fact that you may have ranged weapons, and it still does this silly little dance.  When under ranged fire, it just needs to be taught to charge ahead full steam.

I religiously watch yours and Seanw's let's play vids.  I am getting my fix that way.  Sometimes I have to stop myself from pointing stuff out to you during the playback as if I was actually there and this was a LAN party or something. I am unable to play at the moment because I am trying to resolve a computer issue and I'm in the process of deciding wether to upgrade my existing rig, trying to build a new one or getting a laptop.  It's a conundrum.

Hey Das, have you checked the faction ledger?  I may be wrong in this but I could have sworn you can go into the ledger and in the ledger it lists all the spells that you have available that are currently in effect, either on units and on cities.  From there you can cancel them.  It has all the spells listed that are in effect and right next to them are little check mark boxes you can click.

*  Oops, never mind.  You figured it out later on.  Ha, I was siting there saying out loud, "Come on... check your ledger!  Come on.... just... click... ledger... "  Oh well, at least you now know.  They should fix it to where it is easier to figure out and change enchantments.

Beta 4 A coming out and I don't know if you are continuing, but you was about to declare a war that could be interesting. If you start a new one I'd hope you'd want to choose hard or expert difficulty (one or two levels up). You are getting so good at this game now, and it's no way you can lose this current game on challenging. After you kill Altar there will be nobody to challenge you. It would be even more thrilling to watch if you risked to lose big time, and needed to be very carefull with everything you did. ;)

Edit: Of course AI will improve as well for Beta 4A it seems, but please try one step up at least (next game). It will be so fun to see you struggle even harder to survive. :p

One more please, and one difficulty up, and a few more opponents on a huger map. That would be exciting and nail biting indeed! :)

Those videos were really great. I watched them last weekend. Now I finally have the game myself and can apply what I learned. Good job, Das123.
