Seanw3's Let's Play Beta 4 [.95]

Seanw3's Let's Play Beta 4 [.95]

I have been working on some new videos of the new beta. This time around the focus in the early game is centered on character development instead of grand strategy. I love it, but some may not understand how to manage the early game now that it is different. The change is subtle, but now exploration is the key to success. You have to go out into the wastes and find resources, take on quests. Kill what you can and run from anything you can't is a good rule of thumb. The video starts a few turns in after I had the presence of mind to start recording. What you may have missed is me finding my early heroes and wiping out some easy baddies. I explored a little, soloing my two heroes with great care. When the video starts I have found the limits of that strategy and regroup in order to take on harder monsters. You will notice that my city seems to take care of itself. There is not alot of micromanagement in the early game, just some really important choices.

I'll have to upload it again. Should be no more than 40min.

It's Kraxis.  He's sooo misunderstood.  They hate him.

It's nice seeing an FE video that spends time on strategic analysis.  I wasn't aware that you'd tweaked diplomatic relations lower for opposing kingdom/empire factions, and (presumably) higher for identical ones.  This makes sense, though I'd like to see an advanced option in the final game that allows the user some degree of control over this.  It would be interesting to play games with many factions where the empire/kingdom binary was ignored, and others where it figured heavily.

Any work from you still to come on city differentiation?

I may not have shown it there, but actually the penalty for different allegiance increases over time. By the endgame there is simply no chance for peace across the lines of idealology.

I am thinking about some new Realm Wonders that require large amounts of Influence to construct. I have already switched Merchantcross Bazaar to 100 Influence. I will probably have a production wonder, a shard wonder, and maybe a Citadel wonder for defense. Other than that aspect, I think the basic city differentiation is quite good. I don't want to add more complexity until I get the AI to use what we already have.

If the AI ever becomes formidable, that could be a lot of fun.

By the way, can you change the diplomatic positive/negative statements that represent modifiers?  I noticed you commenting on these in the video, and I agree.  Quite a few are pretty opaque.

Truly high level wonders would be a nice strategic option to have available.

I really, really hope that Stardock are looking closely at your mods and that you are happy with them adopting or working from some of your ideas Sean. Because I want FE to hit the ball out of the park and I think they need more of the balance and variety that you seem to target with your mods. Not to say they won't do a decent job themselves, but you have some ideas that haven't yet appeared from them.

Of course I realise that I can always get your mod(s) after release and I may do that but I still want vanilla FE to be as good as possible.

I think beta tester opinion is generally headed towards the conclusions I came to a few weeks ago, which inspired this latest mod. I am pretty happy with the results so far. The AI modding is really alot of fun and kind of a new area for me. I would love to pit my AI against Fb's in a battle royale sometime.
