I agree, and it's why I feel ashamed of it now. It was a childish and vengeful thing to do.
Thing is, you are remorseful and realise it was the wrong thing to do. It will not change the past but it gels well for making better decisions now and in the future. More power to you.

The idea of putting up a pic of your ex to show how hot she was does kind of remind me of the old sad drunk talking about the time he scored 4 touchdowns in a single game in high school 20 years ago.

Not the best pick up line, but not terrible as video game forums go I guess. A little too eager and overzealous I think. Maybe start with small talk first.
There is so much obfuscation regarding what men and women like to the other, that it can hard to believe that they ever like something that is "non-traditional" (using a politically neutral tone of course). But just as there are women into IT and games, there are men who enjoy gardening and shopping, and it is up to individual characteristics just what attracts people to who-else, even for "non-traditional" likes. 
And don't get me started in a conversation about how a person's culture and gender expectations has a big effect on what they like too.

That was part of a conversation I had with a socially awkward friend...apparently things were going pretty good up to this point. But saying "I think about you when I masturbate" is probably the worst line I have ever heard.

Oh no, she never talked to him again and blocked him on Facebook. I don't really talk tot he guy much, in fact this was the first conversation I had with him in 6 years, and haven't really talked to him since.

And if she answered no, I'd come back quickly with: "D'yer want some?" 
Believe it or not, that line [along with other small talk and compliments] worked more often than you'd think.
