Derek's Beta 4 post covers this best.  But essentially, improvements now replace each other. So you won't see a study + school + library + university + whatever.  Instead, you upgrade your research building into a better one and that replace it.

In doing so, a player, at a glance, can just look at a city and tell how good that city is in research or money making or production or what have you.  A city that would have used say 30 tiles in beta 3 would use around 4 in beta 4.  And construction works the same as training a unit, you choose a building and press a button and it's added to the queue.  There is no tile placement.

There is no manual tile placement, but it is done for you right? Does that mean that 'internal' building (like in Civ) is completely out then?

Few questions/ideas:

Do city improvements branch?  Does this branching occur based on the type of settlement or faction?

As for resources, I like the disabling feature, maybe have a quick-rebuild option that costs gold or mana (if you have proper spell)

I'd like to see a fort series improvement that prevents disabling of features if the army is below a certain strength (improving the level raises the power needed to raze)

I like this direction.  My wish/hope was for manual placement, but as long as it's not a separate window a la Civ, I'm happy.  The cloth map looks amazing.

Yeah, I agree. That new cloth map looks pretty f'ing spiffy to me, too.

new cloth map ftw.  the new resource hud icons look better too, and its' interesting that only some tiles get essence (not sure if that was mentioned before).

Outposts no longer get destroyed, they get captured.  External resources get disabled when attacked but come back online after n turns (this is subject to internal play testing results).

I like this.  It could give the map a sense of evolution.

I too would like the option to raze anything as my tastes are much different than that of my neighbors

I like the new cloth map too.

It would be nice to have rivers that run through forests though. Doesn't make sense that rivers always have to be clear of trees.

This would be cool. Also I would like to see rivers springing from a lake.

I've asked this in several threads now...without response. I'm becoming afraid....

My only problem with the new cloth map art is that while I like the new look of revived trees they look like they have been planted in rows instead of growing naturally.

It would be very strange if we couldn't raze outposts. Don't worry about it.

I think there should be an option to raze an outpost or external resource (but only razeable resources would able to be razed permanently).  Maybe at a cost, to reduce over-use of this feature.  Or maybe it just takes 2-3 turns to raze?  Speaking of this, I think razing a city should not be instant either.

Compared to the dead tree graphic on the map which works very well, the revived trees do kind of look funny, I agree.

When your settlement moves from a village (level 1) to level 2 you can choose its specialization -- Town, Fortress, Conclave.

That choice determines what types of improvements your city has available to it.

A town's improvements focus around getting you zee money and making zee food for itself and your other cities.

Fortresses are geared around producing really good soldiers and being really hard to conquer.

Conclaves are all about maximizing research and magic.

All cities can still build units, improve their production, and do some research. But it's not like in Beta 3 where every city you just build the same stuff. First, there's a lot more improvements to choose from. Second, improvements take the place of existing ones.

Cosmetically, in a screenshot, they look similar to what you had in Beta 3.  But from a game mechanic point of view, they end up much smaller and you can quickly tell that THIS is my mega money making city and THIS city is my super soldier making city.

The beta 4 arguments about cities will involve saying that one type of city if over powered (or under powered).

I should just write the complaint posts myself to get it started:

"Conclaves are ridiculous, they make it too easy to win by throwing crazy spells around"

"Nonsense! Fortresses need to be nerved. While you're going up that tech tree and trying to get more essence, my unkillable knights will be wiping you out."

"You guys are idiots. While the egg-head magicians are trying to cast a better fireball and the grunts are doing acrobatic training, I'll have bought off all the elite mercenaries and made alliances with everyone who will crush you while I'm sipping on tea."

My guess is that we're looking at early August for Beta 4.  The Political Machine 2012 is tying up our QA resources this month.

Thanks for letting me know that it won't be coming within a few weeks. ^^

I can't tell you how excited I am by these upcoming changes.  I really think FE will be a contender among the big boys when it releases.

I picked Borderlands up in the Steam sale, and am very surprised how good the game is.  I always thought it to be a brainless shooter, but it has something more, that makes it quite interesting to play.

Also the graphics appeal to me as they do in FE. :)

Haha just dont fall behind in levels, the game is quite punishing in that area, you have to do almost every single quest... and then some :)
