Why do people "need" spoilers?

Why do people "need" spoilers?

I know everyone sees them on racing cars, especially Formula One, where it's evolved into a science and artform......

....but in reality 'low-speed' [that's what it is] aerodynamics will show they are as beneficial as the proverbial 'tits-on-a-bull' at anything RESEMBLING a legal speed limit.

Yes, an F1 develops enough downforce at 120mph to drive upside-down on a ceiling....[which is totally impractical], and even the road car I drive has a rear 'spoiler' added because designers discovered the car wanted to 'wander' at speeds around 130-odd.

OK, so they look 'groovy'....like Starsky and Hutch's 'stripes'....but really....

The issue is with people who insist on SPOILING other people's enjoyment of a film or TV series, etc.... why?....to show off that they have seen it already...or what?

Here's a hint.

It's called a "spoiler" FOR A REASON!

What say you learn communication skills which enable you to talk ABOUT a movie  WITHOUT ruining it for anyone else, OK?

It's actually NOT THAT HARD.

And no, alerts are meaningless....and about as useful [usually] as warning someone you are about to shoot with..."this might hurt".

Remember the movie with the line "I see dead people"?  Imagine how that can be SPOILED.

Saying [about Titanic]..."oh, the boat sinks in the end..." isn't quite the same thing....and that's where common sense kicks in....along with consideration for others.

I would hope people would be respectful of others and use the tag and warnings despite the arguments presented in the OP.

And so would I....;)

Specifically, the thread re Prometheus was posted by someone suggesting the story/background was related to/inspired by Halo .... at a time when all anyone knew of the Movie was from preview trailers [which are not spoilers, obviously] and clarification of its background/basis was from the film's Director [Ridley Scott] in interview, again not a spoiler by definition.

There was/is no reason to subsequently add spoilers, tagged or otherwise to someone else's thread.

And no, as an Admin I don't necessarily have the advantage of simply avoiding threads for whatever reason - it's not about 'me' it's about others who frequent the forums whose enjoyment [of a story] may be inadvertently ruined by the actions of a few.

Yes, the blackout text is a helpful feature but it still beggars the question why do people NEED to post spoilers?

"It’s also possible that it’s “easier” to read a spoiled story. Other psychological studies have shown that people have an aesthetic preference for objects that are perceptually easy to process.

“So it could be,” said Leavitt, a psychology doctoral student at UC San Diego, “that once you know how it turns out, it’s cognitively easier – you’re more comfortable processing the information – and can focus on a deeper understanding of the story.”"

So...in other words....spoilers are for morons.

That 'study' is a load of tripe....ranking up with the government grant to develop a female surfboard.

Why bother going-along-for-the-ride in a series like 'Survivor'?  [I certainly don't] but have a friend who was Lighting Director on most of them ....and he had an NDA with a Seven Million Dollar US penalty clause [he knew the winner before the show was aired fully].

Again, you "DON'T talk about Fight Club" because the story has a twist.  It is more than 'just' a line of dialogue....;p

Quoting Heavenfall, reply 7Mostly it's just people that want to discuss the whole thing with each other combined with the fact that the world doesn't revolve around you.

The world does not revolve around exclusionists who believe they have the right to disclose plot details ruining the enjoyment of others.

If someone wishes to get indepth with minutae do it 'exclusively' via Personal Message.  ONLY your target audience will be affected.

Have you ever wondered about the subtext of "The first rule of Fight Club"?

How many of you out there have had the results of a race/match/tournament revealed to you/blurted out to you BEFORE you had sat down to watch it?

Was it fun?

How can the freedom of Stardock's Forums be equated with warnings 'excluding' members from accessing certain threads in case their enjoyment [of something] may be harmed?

Stardock's sites/forums are free to ALL, without fear nor favour [only limitation is to 13+ [COPPA]].  To attempt to exclude some members for any 'reason' IS against "Official Policy".

The forums are for the enjoyment of all, not merely some.

So you want the forums to be free and available to all, where noone is excluded, and you're trying to argue that we can't do certain things? Riiiiight.

Just so we're on the same page, my opinion: posting spoilers is rude because it steals enjoyment from others and we have the spoiler tag for that reason (probably). But I think we should be able to discuss works of fiction on these forums.

Made you look

There are lots of 'things' you cannot do on these forums.....always have been.

And, yes, we're on the same page re "spoilers is rude" which is why they should be limited to their own authored threads, not those of others.

Should have made a new thread about it. Now you've ruined it for me.

Did you read that one post by Jafo?  There's a twist about halfway through - it's actually about movies!!!

The Internet is a spoiler machine. There are so many inadvertent ways to have things spoiled for you.

Where forums are concerned...I kind of feel like if someone isn't smart enough to read the topic of a post and realize they are taking a calculated risk of having things spoiled for them if they continue, then I don't have much sympathy for them. Especially since I could avoid that forum post entirely, log on Facebook and accidentally read someone's status: "OMGZZ FREDDIE DIED??!!! SO SAD!!!"

If you are passionate enough about something that a spoiler would ruin your life, bury your head in the sand until you watch/read it as soon as possible. If you take too long, that's too bad. The Internet isn't going to wait for you and why should it?

That said, those that post spoilers in a thread with no context or reason are trolls.

Edit: I doubt this will go over well

Actually, it's not just growing on his buttocks.

Apparently some male crew members have it growing on their genitalia.

Oh shit, now I've gone and done a spoiler....

.... about the sexual shenanigans on particular STOS episode that has yet to air. :w00t:
