Please Be Courteous...Don't Leave Your Wingman Hanging

Alright peeps, here's the deal...the game starts, we're all having fun, then 10 minutes in "So-and-so has left the game"...5 minutes later, "Such-and-such has left the game"...

And now your teammates are left hanging and facing ridiculous odds...

I understand most of us have real lives that surprisingly don't involve Sins...but quitting sucks, it really really sucks for your team...I don't mind losing...legitimately losing...but I don't enjoy having to fend for myself while being tag teamed...

The last game I played ended up becoming a 4v1 half-way through, and at that point the "fun factor" starts to dissappear...a man can only take so many one-sided pew pews...

Do not be confused...it is etiquette to quit when you clearly are going to lose...but you quit as a team, which is fundamentally different than ragequitting because you aren't doing well...please please please consider the following...

First, TRY TO AVOID QUITTING WHEN POSSIBLE...

  1. Shit happens...sometimes you have a bad start, sometimes things aren't going well, sometimes the teams get stacked...that sucks...really, it does, but these things happen and rage-quitting isn't going to help anyone...it also makes you unpopular...remember it's a game and that at least some part of you is just looking to have fun...
  2. Sins games take time...this isn't Internet Spades where a game can be beasted out in 15 minutes...Sins games can take several hours, so expect to be there for several hours...a quick check at the game's speed settings and map size should give you a good feel for how long the game is going to take...if you only have a quick hour, don't join a five-star map on slow, slow, slow...
  3. Don't put yourself in situations where you're prone to get upset...you know who you are...if you can't take a good beating while keeping your head held high, then be pickier about which games you join...if you can't tolerate losing then stick to comp stops or play with only people you know...I always like it when noobs take a chance and go out of their comfort zone, but don't complain or take it out on your team when you get it handed to you...
  4. Team games are team games...you don't necessarily need to be in 1st place for your team to win...even if you are in a bad spot, entrenching and supporting your allies can lead your team to victory...1 man in suicide spot who keeps 2 eco players busy is still contributing to the cause...

Sometimes, quitting is unavoidable...when you absolutely need to quit, BE AS COURTEOUS AS YOU CAN...

  1. If you know in advance that you only have 1 hour, notify your team in advance...let them know you can't play till the end of time...
  2. Sometimes games get frustrating...everyone has their limits, and while you should try to stick with it, I understand that may be asking a lot...the least you can do is just leave with a simple "Sorry, I need to go" or "gg"...none of this "Up yours!" or "Stupid n00bs..." bullshit...it doesn't matter if you had awful luck or poor teammates, just "gg" and go...
  3. There are asshats on ICO....there are trolls...there are jerks...and I don't blame you if you don't want to play with them anymore...but first, do a reality check: how many of your teammates are being jerks?  If the answer is not "ALL OF THEM", then at least one poor innocent player is going to get screwed by you leaving...ignore the big meanies, and just try your best...if you absolutely can't take it anymore, then just leave...no "I have to have the last word" shit, just "gg" and leave...
  4. No matter what your reasoning for leaving, leave your team in the best position possible....give away your resources, entrench your last planet, throw the remenants of your fleet at the enemy...some things like giving away resources take 30 seconds tops and can make a world of difference to your team...

The bottom line is: BE COURTEOUS

We all have times when we really need to go or just can't take it anymore, but please please please try not to let your teammates suffer from your misfortune...

If anything Boshimi is exactly what I'm talking about...even when he was doing awful, he still followed me with his fleet instead of quitting and helped as best as he could....

Carbon the other night was doing it right too (even if that game was a mod test).  Even though Zombie and I were both focusing on him, he did his best to die slowly to try to give Goa a chance.

I can be your next wingman if you want. My last Rebellion game also ended in me having to fend off two other players because my teammates left...

It isn't over when the first Titan enters the battlefield people, don't panic!

2v1s are so much harder in Rebellion too...Titans and corvettes just make it really hard, even if there is a skill advantage...

Not to mention Orkulus Rex...

I remember that SC2 gives teammates control of the units of an ally who quit - not sure if Ironclad has the resources to implement that feature though.

This should be pinned.

Vasari Loyalists have no problems 2v1 in the slot if they can live just long enough to get strip to core. Then they just pack up and leave to the uncontested center.

VL are OP...not exactly a good faction to use as a baseline for generalizations....

Still people always have the tendency to abuse this anyways since you start snowballing like hell.

BRQ

Actually I'm more okay with it when it's with people I know and I'm on TS....even if the game isn't going so well, I still enjoy talking on TS...it's ICO games with random people that it's most annoying...

Cool man....steam, forum, and ICO name are all the same for me...

This is a really good thread mostly because it allows you to achieve the most amount of fun out of any multiplayer game (either on ICO or custom LAN).

When you are going to get steam-rolled, mid to late game for various reasons (they could be anything really), dig in. It makes a world of difference to your team if you can hang on as it forces the other team to keep their forces more widely distributed (or risk leaving a flank open to attack).

I kinda want to start playing online, but I think I wouldn't stand a chance, you probaly need to be able to beat cruel AI to have a chance? ;p

Just got out of a 4v4...some people quit, at least one guy MDed, I think the game ended with only 4 humans left...

Anyway, there was a suicide player who lost everything but a single kol capital ship....instead of quitting though, he actually stayed through the entire game even though for hours he had nothing but this one capital ship...

His Kol Battleship assisted in the last battle of the game, a battle which consisted of:

Fully upgraded Advent SB with Meteor Storm, fully upgraded Vasari SB, lvl 10 Eradica, lvl 10 Progenitor, handful of Iconus Guardians, and handful of repair bays and Advent hangars (with shield bestowal)...

VS.

Three large fleets with at least 5 or 6 mid/high level caps, 2 titans (two Ankylons, one lvl 6), several hundred frigates, several ogrovs, and continual reinforcements...

Turns out though that the single Kol battleship held by the suicide player went and distracted one of the three fleets which followed it to the other edge of the gravity well...thus, the defences only had to contend with 2 fleets at first instead of all 3...while eventually all three fleets engaged the defences, had the AI replacement not chased that kol, my titan and progenitor would have most certainly died (both got under 10% health) and I would have had no way to counterattack...

This was a unique situation, but the point is, this suicide player lost everything yet microing his one ship helped to avoid a pyrhic victory and is what got us victory (well, that and Wail and SttC)...

Unfairs...if you can handedly beat an unfair in a 1v1 or 2 unfairs in a 2v2 without abusing the AI (so, turtling and milking XP for your titans and caps), then you probably are okay...there are some really good players, but there are also lots of new players...some games even are noobs only, and if you are lucky a veteran may be willing to play with you and teach you some things...

Hmm, well, seeing how I'm just playing against hard atm, I don't think I am ready yet xD

Well if you can guarantee playing with other new players it won't be too bad...as long as you don't care about your win-loss record, it can be lots of fun...
